Why does my action not stay closed?
« on: May 23, 2009, 02:06:34 PM »
I was having accuracy problems I bedded the forend from the forend iron to the mounting lug, the free floated the rest of the way. Today at the range I notices that if I had the rest behind the hinge pin the action would open on firing.  I never noticed this before, but I do not know if I ever had the rest behind the pin either. Is this normal or is something wrong?

223, HB, wood stock, and yes, I was getting consistent inch groups at 100 yds. Well, they ranged from 3/4" to 1 1/4", but that was probably me not the rifle.

Thanks, these particular loads were neck sized only, so that could be the problem. I may not have been closing the rifle forcefully enough as I was sitting at a bench when loading so that could be the problem. Also the rifle probably only has around 100 rounds through it, so it may be a break-in issue. There was some oil on the locking surface, but I cleaned it off.

So I don't know what the problem is but at least you pointed me in the right direction(s).  I don't remember the rifle doing this the first time I shot it, which was with factory ammo. So first I'll take another look at the locking surface, then I'll shoot some factory ammo and see if it still opens.

if you had oil on the latch or shelf clean them real good, then smoke the latch and close the gun then open it up and look at the latch shelf and make sure the latch engagement is even on the shelf

Finally got back to the range today. Before leaving I carefully cleaned and dried the locking surfaces. That seemed to have been the problem. I fired a couple Remington factory stuff to foul the barrel. Placing the rest in front of the trigger guard did not cause the action to open. Then tried some of my neck-sized only reloads  and the action stayed closed no matter where the rest was placed.

I do not think the I have the bedding quite right on the foreend yet because and I get vertical stringing of almost 2"@ 100yds, depending on where the rest was. The shot placement was repeatable and predictable though, so I still have hopes of correcting it. What I'm trying for is solit bedding from the screw back, and floating from the screw forward.

I shot my reloads(27.5gns Varget, 65gn V-Max), Remington 55gn FMJ and some Brown Bear 62gn HP. The Remington is just some stuff I bought to get brass and the BB was just out of curiosity. My scope is set so my standard reload is 1" high at 100 yds. The Russian stuff is correct for windage but 1" low at that range. As I was wrapping up I notice the guy next to me with a AR was very frustrated. Said he had some Russian Silver Bear zinc coated 62gh HP ammo but it would jam every 3rd shot in his AR. Now he was stuck with 500 rds of something he could not use.

I told him it might work in my single shot and if the price was right I'd buy it. He offered me the whole lot for $30, I told him the price was right and handed over the cash.

Sounds like you got a good deal on that ammo.
