Newb in the house
« on: May 28, 2009, 04:52:33 AM »
Got lucky and picked up a syn Handi in .243 from a co-worker for $90. Had a little surface rust but shot OK with some borrowed shells so figured can't go wrong for deer gun for my kids. Plans are to sand it and paint it camo anyway. Trolled around here before buying it and got a lot of info-Thanks! for such a great site. One bud has bull barrel .243 with wood stock, trigger is horrible. I'm the tinkerer so I told him we could fix his, mine was not too bad but went in and polished trigger and hammer, left the tranfer bar alone. I have a Savage with Accutrigger and my Handi rivals it now- I love it. No felt drag, breaks like glass, not too light. Thanks to AFM for his thorough instructions on the tune up. Have had 12 ga. Topper for 40 years-never had need to open it up. Again great site. Now I just need to go to the classified and see if I can trade some of my .270 brass and .224 bullets for some ammo to get me going. Looking forward to being in the Handi family.

Welcome. I am kind of new to the rifles myself. I have been shooting the shotguns for about 15 years. The guys here are great. That .243 should serve you well and what a steal at $90.

Welcome to the wild wonderful world of Handi-holics. ;D  Sounds like your "handi" enough if you have already done the trigger job. ;)  Congrats on a good buy.  DP

Been shooting and tinkering with guns most of my life. Got chewed out by dad for "unauthorized" trigger work on on a 22-250 we had when I was 12. He was OK once he saw creep was gone and it was safe! Shooting Times magazine was to blame for that I think? Didn't have $60 for a Timney trigger back then either. I understand most rifles I can afford are of generic nature and a little hand work can go a long way towards making them great shooters. That was 40 years and I don't know how many groundhogs ago and that old Interarms X still shoots great. Had a couple of 10/22's and you just have to tinker with them, its so much fun. Rimfire Central is great for those little chores. I really enjoy getting a gun set up well and leaving it alone after that. Most of what I have, I have  had for years. Between wanting to work up the best load I can for whitetail for me and the kids and helping a couple of my buds who got Handis before I did I expect to stay busy reading here for awhile longer. Never owned a .243 before but always thougth that was ideal caliber size for mixed varmit and deer. I have always been fortunate anough to find others who knew so much more than me and follow their advice. Looks like I have done it again finding this site!
