240gr JSP Mag Tech Bullets
« on: July 14, 2009, 05:14:57 PM »
Guys I was going to order some cast bullets until I ran into a great deal for 500 240gr Mag Tech bullets for the .44.  I searched and didn't have a lot of luck find threads where people had hunted with the bullets.  Anyone use them?  How's their performance and accuracy?

I am using 2400 and since I don't have a manual with Mag Tech bullets I looked through the ones I have, Lee, Speer, Nosler, Hornady, Sierra and some max 2400 out at 18.7 or 8 grs and others go up to 21 almost 22grs.  Any help on a good load for these with 2400 would be appreciated.

These are being fired from a 629 S&W Mountain Gun.

I was going to buy some heavy cast, but I just had to pick these up for the price.  Cast is next on the list.  :)

Thanks

Well, I am about over the MagTechs.  :)  I have been using 2400 with standard primers and have went from 17grs-20grs and I have not found anything to hit a 2" group at 30yds with my 629 Mountain Gun.  I checked the bullet diameter and they are .431", advertised .429".  The throats of my S&W slugged .4295".  Is the .431" bullet in the tight throat the reason it won't shoot them?  I shot some 300gr Sierra JSP .429" and they went into 1" at 30yds.  I wish I had more of them.

Nothing but hard cast bullets for me... I get great groups, and I know they have killed everything I shot with them with one shot.. Deer, hogs, black bear and I am sure anything else I would shoot with them...

I never buy something because it is on sale, I buy what I know works best. JMHO

Thanks, so you knew exactly what bullets to buy right out of the gate?  Never tried anything except one type of bullet?  I figured since I got them for a great price nothing else I can shoot, plink, go bang with them.  JMHO

So again, with the .4295" cylinder throats what size cast bullets do I need to order, .430" to fit the throats tighter?  Or .429"?  I pm'd Mikey awhile back and he gave me what I needed but I deleted that message by accident.

When using Mag-tech load them and make sure the cylinder closes. I have had many that were crimped just enough below the cannelure to cause the cylinder not to close fresh from the box.

No I have tried other bullets, but it did not take me long to know what works better. I don't waste my money any longer getting stuff that was on sale. Also people I shoot and hunt with take my advice and go the hard cast route as well. Just giving my opinion, you can use it or not...

Got the Mag-Techs sold.  Called Mount Baldy today to order some 250 Keith bullets.

I have 100 240 SWCBB bullets from somewhere, a friend gave them to me.  I loaded some up over a massive 5grs of Bullseye, 2 5 shot groups were right around 1" and then 3 more groups are around 1.5" at 15yds for 3 6 shot groups.  I saw that several water bottles were using the field around mid-day so I loaded some more up and setup for ambush around some clover they were coming to.  Surprisingly the 240SWC+5grs Bullseye are easily minute of water bottle from seated field positions all the way out to 40yds.  All bullets completely penetrated, that is an advantage of of cast from what I have read, and all bottle bled out quickly.  I read that this was one of Elmer Keith's low end loads for the .44.  Recoil from the Mountain Gun is between a .38 and a .357, very nice actually.  I am getting a little leading right at the forcing cone, I figure from hard bullets and the pressure is probably a little low.

I plan on running the Mount Baldy's with 2400 powder.

Bearcat 74,

You do not want the bullet larger than than the throat. If the bullet is larger than the throat, you may create a high chamber pressure as the bullet is swagged down to throat diamater.

At the same time, after the bullet leaves the throat, you do not want the grove diamater in the barrel larger than the bullet diamater.

If the bullet coming out of the throat is smaller than the grove diamater in the barrel, your bullet may not deform/bump up enough to obturate in the barrel.
