I went and did it.  I ordered a Stoeger Coach Gun and then went to SASS and joined online.  I'm going this Saturday to a local match to look at guns and finish making my decision about caliber and type.  I'm leaning toward .44 because I am already set up to reload that caliber.  One question though, when downloading to meet SASS power requirements, do I have to put in a wad and then fill the case with filler.  Oh, the SASS web site did not ask me to register an Alias when I joined.  Is that normal?
Thanks,
buzz

Get, and read a good reloading manual.  You are looking for a lead bullet load at about 750 foot per second.  Experiment a little for an accurate load in your gun.  No wad or filler is needed with the correct load using a fast powder like Winchester 231, or Bullseye.

Thanks Larry.  I have the current Lyman and Modern Reloading manuals.  I just wasn't sure about all the air space in the bullets.

Air space in the cartridge is fine with smokeless. However, it's a bad idea if you're shooting black powder.

A lot of reloading sites and books have 'cowboy loads' sections these days.
No fillers, but pick a powder like Unique or Trail Boss that fills the case as much as possible.
but having said that,I've used  W231 with good success,it's just a good powder I reckon.

welcome to the fun !!

I have been researching powder and discovered that the powder I have been using (HP-38) is the exact same thing as Win 231.  Both are made in the same Florida plant on the same production line at exactly the same time using exactly the same recipe.  They are just branded, packaged and sold by Hodgdon and Winchester respectively.  Look at the recent manuals or go to the Hodgdon loading center,  http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp, you will discover that the numbers are identical.  Some suggest that any variance you might find in older manuals (about .2 grain) are the result of different testing equipment.

That said, don't mix the two.  I don't even mix two of the same labeled powder. Powder has been known to vary from batch to batch.
