10/22 barrel loosens
« on: May 07, 2009, 10:04:29 AM »
The barrel on my older 10/22 keeps coming loose and throws my groups off.  This is just their standard old 10/22, nothing fancy.

Should I use a lock-tite or something similar on the locking lock screw threads?  Should I get a better fitting lock block or whatever it is called (the block that holds the barrel in) to give a more consistent fit - does anyone make a better fitting block?

How tightly should I tighten the hex head locking screws?  Is there a trick some of you folks use?  Should I add small lock washers?  Should I back off one quarter turn after tightening the screws down?

Any and all advice would be appreciated.  I am being over run with small furry critters and it is time for pest control.  Thaks.  Mikey.

I would try the mildest of the lock tights if you feel you need to go to glue.  you may try something else like candle or spray wax on the bolt to add a little bit of tension  Same could e said about a thin nylon washer.
As you know the reciever is Aluminium and the blots are steel.
I simply make mine tight and snug each side down 1/4 turn at a time till snug
I never really crank on the bolts so as not to strip the al reciever threads.
So when should I show up to help keep you from being over run?  ;)

I'd check the RFC 10/22 Forum for the best cure.  ;)

Use the "BLUE" locktite. It can be broken free if you ever need to.

If you use the "RED" locktite, the bond can still be broken, but with difficulty.

If you want to break the locktite bond, on any locktited fastener, make sure you use a properly sized tool. Use a very steady pressure on the tool to break the bond, regardless of which locktite formula you use.

Second the blue loctite. I use that on the block and stock. 20 lbs is right for both the block and the stock to receiver. A tip on the loctite if you heat the tool while in the screw it makes it much easier to get them out. I use a mini torch to get scope mount screws out that have had red on them. Years ago I used my wife's clear fingernail polish before I found out about loctite. It is non permanent as well. By the way 20 lbs is about when the allen wrench starts to flex on the long side with your thumb at the end if you are not using a torque wrench.
