.357 mag handi?
« on: April 29, 2009, 03:26:07 PM »
I found one today at a local sporting goods store and have a few questions. It is also on an SB2 frame. These come with a scope mount but I was wondering if it is possible to have iron sights installed? How accurate are these out of the box? Do you have to do alot of tweaking to them to make them shoot well? Thanks in advance.

Snake man,

My 357 has required almost no tweaking.  I merely took a little wood out of the fore-end and added an oring.  It probably is the most accurate rifle I own.  I fired ten shots into less than 2" at 100.  In the hands of a real shooter it would do very well.

It ain't no grizzley getter, but is sure is fun.

My barrel came with sights, as well as drilled and tapped.  If yours is not, it should be a quick job for a gunsmith.

You are lucky! I would like to find one so I wouldn't have to mess with the lengthy barrel program. Is it wood or syn? I've never seen a 357 SB2 without sights. How old is she? I'd like to run across one.  I could use JUST ONE more receiver. :)I don't recall any negative reports on the them. Should be a good shooter, have fun.

It is synthetic. Not sure of the age.

357Mag accessory barrels have always been drilled and tapped for sights until just recently when Ilion switched to scope rails only, could be  it's an SB1 which comes with the new style checkered synthetic stock and is a slick barrel except for the scope rail, the right side of the frame will tell you if it's an SB1 with the warning they put on it. Lots of possibilities for either SB1 or SB2. Gardner used to install sights for $47(drill and tap plus the sights), dunno what Ilion charges now, but I bet it considerably more, gunsmiths commonly charge about $20 a hole for drilling and tapping, plus the cost of the sights. The Williams WGRS-H&R will work in the two rear scope mounting hole, then you only need a front sight, see Peep and Firesights in the FAQs.

I will have to look at it again. I remember that it said SB2 on the barrel but I didn't think to look at the frame. I will check it again and give you guys some more details.

Most barrels are marked SB2, but that has nothing to do with what frame they put the barrel on, barrels are made in runs of up to 500, they only started offering the SB1 framed 357 and 44mag in 2008, so the barrel run they were working on may well have been from well before that.  ;)

Ok Tim, I can't resist asking this any longer. WHY do they put SB2 on THE BARREL? Doesn't SB2 have only to do with the frame?  I'd think they'd stamp the receiver. This seems ODD....When we order a barrel will it be stamped SB2, all 500 of them? Is it that they stamp them if they originally put them on a SB2 frame or mean they can only go on a SB2 frame? I had to try to explain this to two friends when they went in to get their 44 SB2 with sights the other day. Maybe this should be in the FAQs under Oddities!  TIMKWYS ;) Guess I'd rather they fix the availibility of the barrels for us rather than the stamping.

Because rifle barrels have always been on SB2 frames, and I think all barrels so far were made in Gardner, I have yet to see an Ilion marked firearm reported, but Ilion will likely drop the SB2 designation on barrels, at least on the 357 and 44mags anyway.

Mine is very accurate.  I've never owned a Handi that required tweeking, but then I don't shoot the rimless cartridges.
