24" Barrel and scope
« on: September 12, 2003, 07:03:55 AM »
I am looking to purchase an Encore probably a 7mm-08 barrel first for deer hunting.  This will be my first single shot rifle.  From reading the posts, I'll probably become addicted and end up buying quite a few barrels.  Please help me with a couple of questions.

Is there a way to attach a scope to the factory 24" barrel?  Am I correct in saying that the factory 24" barrel is not drilled for a base?

Thanks

I think that barrel is tapped for a scope I have a 7mm Rem Mag factory barrel that came tapped from the factory. Rudy

Hi :D ,

Factory barrels are drilled & tapped for mounting scopes.  You will need to remove the factory rear site by unscrewing the elevation screw on top.  Careful not to loose the screw or spring.  Next you will notice a pin @ the front of the sight.  Carefully drive the pin out.  You should now be able to see the screwheads that hold the rear sight on.  Remove those screws and under the sight are four holes for a scope base.  I would then reassembly the rear sights and place everything in a baggy for future use.
That's all there is to it.  About 5minutes with a screw driver, small hammer and punch

On rifle barrels just take the four screws out at the top( you will need a small screw driver) of the barrel and put the base on. The rear sight will fold down or you can take it off.

TnEncore,

Your right  , after your post I pulled my 223 Encore from the safe to examine it again.  Depending on scope the front sights may or may not be an issue.  When I posted the "remove the rear sights" I was recalling the procedure from my Contender.  Also had to remove the rear sight when installing the scope on my 223 Encore as they interferred with the front bell on the scope!  I had the old style rear sights, not the current rear fold down sight style.

You just might be a gun nut when your littlest son cheers and yells "DEER MEAT" when Bambi's mother gets shot!

Willy12,

I just got the same barrel/caliber for my Encore.  I really like it, but 1st thing I would do is get a Sims recoil pad to replace the factory recoil pad.  With the low weight of the Encore the recoil and muzzle jump will be quite a surprise.  I am sure you will enjoy this caliber.
