.376 Steyr / 38-55 Conversion?
« on: April 20, 2009, 05:38:04 PM »
I was just wondering if anyone has attempted this, or if it would work without to much hassle?  Doing a little armchair research it looks feasible.  Any advice or experience out their?

Not gonna work, the 38-55 Target has a .379" minimum bore if you're lucky enough to find a 2007 rifle or barrel, most are .380" and bigger,  the 376 uses .375" bullets.

Wow, I didn't realize that the Target Barrels were that big.  After I posted this I went back and looked at the chamber pressures also.  Well I guess this idea aint so feasible after all.

Yeah, it's got some pressure, Hodgdon shows it at about 60kpsi, that and the .501" case head likely puts it close to the limit of the frame's capability, although there are a couple members here that have 6.5-284 Handis that have the same case head size and run 56kpsi and seem to work fine .
