Iowa Turkey Huntin'
« on: February 17, 2009, 04:52:02 AM »
So...how many of you fellow Iowegians are geared up and ready fer turkey season? I'm 'bout to go stir crazy frum havin' nuthin ta hunt this time of year! :o

Went through my stuff yesterday and got my calls sorted back into my fanny pack, and remembered a repair needed to be done to my bag stool, took a look at the seams on my blind too (which I don use much but like to have it ready if needed.) Last week I did some pattern board work with a new Hastings turkey choke in my  97 "Norchester" that I'm pretty happy with.

Now I jist gotta wait fer season to roll around............ :(

Jeepers Poz,

Looks like you and I are the only Iowegians that are excited about hammering a Gobbler in Iowa! ???

My early jaunts out there have shown me that the flocks aren't quite as big this year, not bad, but not what they were last year....at least in my favorite places in Marion County. The morning of that last blizzard I saw a lot of fresh road killed birds b'tween Indianola and Hwy 35 though. Five of them in that short stretch. :'(

I've been seeing more birds than normal. But, I've been down some old dirt roads down by my dad's land!!! When I was a kid you didn't hardly see deer down there let alone turkeys!! But now there is plenty of both!!! I can't wait til I can go down there and bust a big bird!! I will be bow hunting deer down there come fall too!! I have a new .45 acp barrel for my encore pistol(with really hot loads 1100 fps with a 230gr. xtp) that I am getting ready for next winter too!!! I've got my mind on all of the hunting seasons!!!!!!! I hope you have some good luck too!!! I would like to see more Iowigeons on here too!!!!

Got this lil feller with my 97 last year. Hoping to use my CVA Trapper to fill a tag in second season this year, and will save the sawed off 97 fer last season. 8)

Did ok deer hunting last year, filled my antlerless tag with a button buck. Held out for a big rack for my any sex tag, till the last day. Saw some nice racks, but was alaways out of place to score on one. So I shot a HUGE doe on the final day.

Been keeping track of a couple of small flocks of birds since then. Now, as noted, I gotta wait.......... :'(

Update: I've started trying to work up a Black Powder turkey load for my old Crescent SxS this week. Gonna try 70 gr of 3F with about 1 1/4 oz of # 6 shot, in Winchester AA hulls. Have made paper shot cups out of heavy stock and will see how it does. The Crescent is a hammer gun, choked full/modified and if this throws decent patterns I might not get the 97 out of the rack at all this year.

I think it would be fun to smoke one with my frontstuffer and one with the SxS stoked with BP! ;D
