model 99 in 243 rebored to 358
« on: April 15, 2009, 08:17:45 AM »
I have a friend that had two 99's.  I bought his 308 for $250 two years ago and really like it.  It has taken 2 buck and a doe in the last two seasons.

He has a 243 that he will also sell for $250 :-)

The stock has been shortened.  I found a place that will rebore it to a 358 Winchester for $225.00.  I am not interrested in the 243 but always wanted a 358.  I have lots of 308 range brass I can use.  I would replace the stock.  It has a rotary magazine.

Any thoughts?

Will the 358 function smoothly in the 243 magazine?  I thought I read something somewhere that the mags were round specific.

The parent case for both is the 308 winchester.  You should be OK.

I have a 99C that the late Dick Nickel recut from 243 to 358 for me quite some years ago.  The "C's" Magazines are marked 243/308 but you have the rotary magazine not the detatchable so I don't know if you will run into any feeding problems or not.  I had to have the rails on mine opened up a little to get the 358 to feed, but it works fine now.  Matter of fact I'm working up a load with the 180 Speer to use for deer this year!   ;D
