3031 in .444????
« on: April 10, 2009, 03:23:15 PM »
Posting for my Dad. He recently aquired a Marlin .444. He doesn't plan on ashooting it much and doesn't want to buy power specific for it. Anyone have any experience loading 3031 in a .444???

That is what I'm using now, got the load out of the Hodgdon Annual manual, or get it off the IMR powder site.  I'm happy with the 265 Hornady FP, but will try some cast GC's in the future.  IMR 3031 is a good powder for the 30-30, 35 rem, 444 and 45-70, so I have several pounds of it.  DP

From my old Lyman manual I find that for the 225 gn half jacketed bullet, 50-55 gn of 3031 gives you 2030 - 2237'/sec; with the 240 gn jacketed bullet, 50-55 gns gives you 2050-2240'/sec; and, with the 265 gn jacketed bullet 52.8 gns gives you 2200'/sec.  HTH.

If you have 3031, its a good powder. H322 is the best all round powder in big lever rounds. It produces slightly lower velocities compared to RL-7 and 3031, but is much more consistant and stable over temperature. You should be able to easily beat factory ammo specs (except for Hornady) with handloads using either of these powders. Horndy uses special blends to get better velocities than handloaders can produce.
