Savage 24 barrel regulation
« on: September 13, 2009, 03:20:09 PM »
I just swapped a 24 in .22/.410 that I had high hopes for.   It was in great shape and the .22 barrel shot 3/4" groups at 75 yd.  Unfortunately, the shotgun barrel shot unacceptably low and left.  I was able to swap it back for a 24 series S .22/20 ga., the one with the barrel release in front of the trigger guard.  It is in excellent condition.  I just returned from the range, and can report 3/4" groups at 50 yd. with the .22 barrel and the shotgun barrel shoots at the same point of aim as the .22 barrel.  I have a .22 mag./20 guage that has both barrels shooting together, and a .30-30/20 guage where the shotgun barrel shoots just a little low.

I have had others, and found that barrel regulation is a crap shoot.

I was wondering if other model 24 owners have had similar experiences.  What about the models that had the barrels soldered together vs. ones with separated barrels?

Most of all of the 24's I have come across shot low with the shotgun bbl.  This makes the sights cover up what you are shooting at and renders the shotgun of little value.  I had a 30-30/20  where the 20ga bbl shot at least 4 ft. low @ 20yds.  I am in the dark as why Savage would sell something like this.  Surely they must have at least tried to make the bbls shoot to the same point?  bill439

Did either of you guys bore sight the barrels before you shot and made comparisons?   I'm wondering how useful bore sighting is in determining point of impact.

I have bore sighted guns, lots of them, it works great. They have all been with scopes. I have never bore sighted irons before. I just start close and keep making adjustments as I move back until I get he distance I want to be zeroed at. When you have 1 barrel "sighted in" and the other barrel will not shoot to the same POA there is not a whole lot you can do about it. If it is high or low on the shotgun barrel, compared to the rifle barrel - you may be able to use a different load to regulate your point of impact some. For instance in a 20 gauge you could be shooting 7/8 oz loads above the target, but 3" shells will shoot right on. Or vise-versa. Another solution, if you are shooting high or low to a the rifle barrel is to know the settings on the rear sights and move them depending on what barrel you are using. Of course, you will not be able to switch back and forth quickly.

That's a good thing to remember when the shotgun shoots above or below the rifle POI.  I'll remember to use different strength shells should that occur.  By the way, in determining barrel regulation, are you folks using slugs or shot for the shotgun barrel?

To answer a previous question, from what I have read on the net, Savage 24's are usually more accurate with joined barrels but this varies.

My Savage 24  .223/12  has the same problem.  The two barrels shoot to different impact.   I zeroed the .223 with my 2x7 scope and use see through rings to see the open sights for the shotgun barrel.  Im not a real fan of the higher scope mount with the see through mounts but it works pretty good for me.

One thing I have noticed with my 30-30 / 20 gauge is that when the 30-30 barrel heats up at the range it shoots lower and lower as it expands and the shotgun barrel doesn't, this pulls the barrel down and makes it shoot low.  Not a problem in hunting, but keep it in mind when you shght them in.  Larry
