Scoping a RWS 460

I was given a RWS 460 a couple of months ago.  My dad saw it at an auction and thought I would like it.  It was in the box, wrapped in the original plastic with all the tags and things attached, so i assume it was new.  I think he paid $130 for it, so I did alright since I have exactly nil in it.  Anyway, knowing next to nothing about "real" pellet guns, I bought a cheap Walmart airgun scope on the rifle and well, it will put shots within 8 inches of each other.  I have read a bit on this site and it looks like you guys are using "regular" scopes on some of these airguns.  Will a good quality riflescope hold up to the recoil on the 460?

Is the 460 a spring piston or the pneumatic type?  I think just the 'springers' have the 'scope problem due to the excessive vibration. I was shooting my Beeman R1 yesterday and noticed the scope had slipped backwards so far that the rear base was completely out of the grooves. I've read recently that even high quality rifle scopes are built to only withstand rearward recoil and not the forward vibration movement of the piston. I'm using a Tasco 4X on my R1 and it seems to be OK. Nice that it can be set parallax free down to 10 meters and even less I think.

I would use a scope made specifically for air gun use that was made by a quality manufacturer. Its likely that you will pay more for your scope than you did for the air gun.

I have the RWS 460 in .177 and it truly is a magnum air rifle. You do really need a quality scope designed just for air rifles, as the recoil from it will ruin regular scopes. You also need a scope mount that will stay on the rail. RWS now makes a good one piece scope mount with recoil stops and rings built in. It fits great, since it's made for the gun by them. Arround 45.00 bucks though. I topped mine off with a HAWKE Airmax 3-9X40 AO scope $135 from Pyramid air. It is built to handle the peculiar recoil of spring air rifles. Good and sharp, works well. Hawke also has a downloadable ballistic program to help with the set up. Hope this helps, Fishbiscuit
