Does anyone make good 50-140 brass?
« on: March 17, 2009, 05:45:55 PM »
I was thinking of a 50-140 to go along with my 45-120, but I can't find anything but turned brass of an unknown maker, which I was told cannot take very much pressure at all.  If I can't find better brass I may have to give up.  ???

Buffalo arms...http://www.buffaloarms.com/

Quality Cartridge brass...http://www.qual-cart.com/

Custom Brass and Bullets...http://www.custombrassandbullets.com/brass.html

RMC...http://www.rockymountaincartridge.com/

Most brass "brass" will handle 65KPSI without any problems...many of the oddball cases are CNC turned...I would start with "virgin" or new brass if you do go with the 50-140, from a known source...I've had two "not good" experiences with questionable brass so I don't save or pick brass up from ranges or in the field...brass is cheap compared to the rest of the system...the gun, the scope and my body!!!!

Luck on your projects.

Definitely the RMC has been my best brass for the 50-140, very consistent and about the right metallurgy for repeated reloading. You'll love the caliber both smokeless and true black. It's amazingly accurate especially once you get into the paper patching world. With paper patch I have chosen a bullet and paper thickness combination to give me a diameter that when wrapped, I don't have to re size the brass after firing-- you understand why when you price out the brass  -- otherwise you can anneal every so often if you re size a lot. The friction fit is enough to hold the loaded wrapped bullet, and there is a small amount of spring back after firing - the reloaded round chambers just fine. Accurate powder has quite a few listings for loads - pressure is about 28,000 for loadings -- email them for heavier bullet loadings. Good luck and keep us posted. Shiloh's web site has lots of info for patching - but it's mostly geared to patching to bore diameter instead of groove diameter for the wrapped bullet.

Surprising to me you guys don't try the paper patching in the 45-120 or even the 45-70. It's another whole new adventure.

This isn't going to be a standard pressure Handi...I plan on shooting surplus 50 BMG bullets 2000 fps+, so I need brass that can take 40k pressures well.  Looks like there are more choices than I thought!

Some people told me turned brass is no good for 40k pressures, and I haven't seen any good reviews on Bertram stuff.  That leaves Qualilty Cartridge, I will send them an e-mail.
