.44 magnum barrel
« on: March 18, 2009, 03:40:21 AM »
New or stub? I've been shooting .44 mag carbine level loads in my inline muzzleloaders with complete sucess and happiness for a number of years now.I even bought a couple lever gun .44's but never could get the same accuracy as I get from my frontstuffers. My Omega and Black Diamond XR's are both MOA class rifles.Never could get a lever to go less than 3 inches for 3 at 100.Yes its good enough but not good ENOUGH. Know what I mean? I think one of the differences is the twist rate. The levers were 1-38's and the ml's are 1-28. I'm thinking , if I can get a barrel blank with a groove not over .429-.430 and a 1-28 I'd be on my way. I noticed the H&R makes a 444 barrel with a 1-20...Could down load the .444...But .44 Mag brass is alittle easier to come by.Are the new Remington production .44 barrels better in their tolerances? How's the accuracy?

I have a 44 mag Handi made in 2007.  I haven't shot it at 100 yards yet but at 50 yards it shoots into less than an inch using 240 gr. XTP bullets and 25.0 grains of Winchester 296.  I have an old TC Firehawk muzzleloader that is a tackdriver using the same bullet and 100 grs. of Pyrodex.  I don't shoot it much anymore because cleaning it brings out the worst with the bursitus in my shoulders.  Maybe I need to try some of the newer black powder substitutes. Actually I thought that blackpowder was easier to clean up than Pyrodex.

Marlin made 2007 and later barrels are good shooters, those made by H&R before that usually aren't unless loaded hot. I've only shot Hornady LE 225gr FTX ammo in mine, but it shoots good at 100yds, even with my old eye looking thru a peep sight!! ;D

I had one of the old .44 barrels and tried every load combo I could think of and couldn't get it to shoot well.  I got rid of it and later got one of the new barrels and it will shoot clover leafs with XTP and h110 or OT hard cast and Trail Boss at 50 yards.  I haven't printed it at 100 but would expect it to be good.
