 I was just sitting around thinking about different cartridges that would be nice in a handi and the .358 winchester popped into my hear. Has it ever been offered or is it a posibility for a custom?

really just trying to make time go by till my .280 barrel gets here but it would be a great round for the handi.

I don't remember anyone doing one, but it's been discussed before, a 357Mag barrel could be rechambered easy enough as long as it was on an SB2 frame, wouldn't do one on a late model SB1 357Mag frame tho. I've got a 35 Remington that was a 357Maximum in a previous life, it shoots 200gr cast bullets at 2200fps and 240gr cast bullets at 2000fps accurately.  ;)

Actually the whole .308 family would be a good fit for the size and weight.  Start at .243 and go to .358, including .260.  There is a gap in .25, use either the Roberts or .250-3000.  You could say the same about the 06 family.  Or while dreaming, a whole family based on a 45-70 case; this would give the .348 Win.

They make the .243, 7-08 & .308 you would think they would havee offered a .358. It would be a great round for it.

Is there anybody out there that does custom barrels for the handi? Someone said you could ream out a .357 if that is the case maybe I should be looking for a .357 barrel.

Put a nice fixed 4power nikon scope and what a nice deer rifle that would make.

.....You could do the same with the 8mm Mauser family. 6mm Remington, 257 Roberts, 6.5 X 57, 7 x 57, 30 x 57, 8 x 57 , 338 x 57, 358 x 57 and 9.3 x 57. All are ballistically between the .308 Win and 30-06 in power. Over at Hunter's life, there is a contingent of 338 x 57 / 358 x57 users. The arguments always rage about which bullets are better. ;D The long thin 338 bunch, or the short and fat .358 bunch. I think they are about the same really. When done with an "Ackley Improved" shoulder and neck, they are darn near like Short Magnums less the belt.....Seems like the 358 Win would be perfect in the Handi....

My only question is twist rate.The FAQ page lists 357 mag at 1-18 and I seem to remember that 358 Wichesters are in the 1-12 to 1-14.Dont know if that would make a difference or not.I had 358 on a Mauser and loved it.     Doug
