Photos: Puma/Legacy 92 454 Casull 16" carbine
« on: July 22, 2008, 08:04:47 AM »
Some photos of a Puma/Legacy 92 454 Casull 16" carbine.

This is a nice mini 45-70.

Hornady factory load 300 JSP @ 1960 fps, Magtech factory load 260 JSP @ 2110 fps. Handloads Sierra 300 gr @ 1850 fps, LaserCast 300 gr @ 1900 fps.

Now to find a premium hunting bullet tough enough to survive hitting a moose at these velocities. Our national regulations require at least 300 gr @ 1850 fps so I must find a proper bullet.

The gun.

Some ammo to go with it.

Almost hides behing an IPSC target.

Next to another tool.

Leaning on my thigh.

Brazilian steel. Not all the nice guns come from the U.S.

Hammer cocked.

Silly safety. Should be easy to remove.

Hi-Viz front sight.

Hi-Viz rear sight.

The muzzle is mostly hole, very little metal.

Cartridge on its way into the chamber.

Breechface.

The rubber is there, but this gun does not kick all that much. I shot the same day a Ruger #1 458 Lott 400 gr @ 2330 fps and did not want to shoot too many times. But I can shoot this Puma with 300 gr @ 1900 fps all day.

sasu; That's a nice looking carbine you have there.   The Hi-Vis sights caught my attention.   My old eyes don't like the regular steel sights on my Puma.   8)

Those pics are really crisp.  What type camera are you using  ?

An old Nikon Coolpix 5600. 5.1 megapixels. I bought this camera for the macro feature, the usefulness of which you can witness in these photos.

Where did you find those Hi-Vis sights?

Been looking for some for my 454 Puma and can't find any!

These sights came on the gun from the factory. But I installed similar sights on my Winchester 94 and I got those from Midway.

I know this is an old thread, but I just brought one home tonight that is the twin to the one pictured here.  I have one with the 20 " in blue as well, I think the lighter finish looks better than the dark, almost black the blued one has.  The 20" shoots easy for the power, so this one should as well.  This is number 4 of the Rossi's I have now, 357 with Oct. barrel, 44 mag 20" and the 2 454's.  This short one will replace my Win. 94 Trapper in 45 colt as my truck/camp gun.  Don't want to wait till the weekend to shoot it!  Hope the weather holds.  With the Hi-Viz sights, it's easier to see with these old eyes than the regular sights.  DP

I just had mine out the other day doing a little target practice.   Man I've got to do something with the front sights.  My old eyes are worse than ever.   That black post disappears when its pointed at a dark object.

Took my new stainless 16" out today and the sights are great.  Easy to line up and was right on at 25 yd with no adjustment.  Easy to make gravel out of big rocks and this one has a very light crisp trigger as does the blued 20" one.  Also ran 10 rounds of 315g Keith SWC in starline 45 colt case sitting on top of 21.0g of LilGun that feed great and hit pretty much the same spot.  DP
