Stainless rust

Was in my local shop and saw a used stainless Encore with a decent trigger and a scope base. Laminated thumbhole and 28" non fluted .270. Very pretty gun. It had light rust spots on the action and barrel. Had been stored in a hard case.... Bore was pristine. Bought it for 425 on a whim, hope that was a good deal. Anyway, how would you advise taking off rust? Is the stainless a finish or are the action and barrel truly stainless steel throughout? I rubbed it down with Kroil and will check it tonite.

thats a good deal!
even ss will rust in the right environment.
take a soft rag and oil and rub vigorously, that should take the rust off.

Lightly, 0000 steel wool oiled, then clean it like the dickens with an oiled rag to get any of the steel wool off.  Test the finish under the grip first, but it shouldn't change anything, and works like a charm.

if you have it disassembled have it bead blasted with fine media BUT make sure the media hasn't blasted any carbon steel before you use it. If the media has been used for carbon and then on your stainless it will impregnate the particles into the stainless and will rust up again and probably worst. I have seen a barrel rusted like the one you describe come out looking like a brand new one be sure to seal up the bore.

It's "stainless", not "rustproof" steel.

I've got an old Colt Anaconda that rusted slightly on a summer spent in Alaska years ago. You can still see the residue of the small flecks in the frame if you hold it just right to the light.

I took 2 blued rifles in wood stocks, and my Anaconda (stainless) with me. Neither of the rifles had any rust or wood problems, but the stainless pistol came home with rust spots (albeit tiny ones).

Go figure.

Rubbing with a rag took the spots off the barrel. Action will need more effort.
