well thats a first
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:35:40 PM »
Ok this is a first for me I thought I would post it and go to bed and in the morning have all kinds of stuff to read. A few weeks back I bought a new .308 survivor before it left the shop I switched the stock to a pallet stock. I got the rifle home mounted a Bushnell Elite 3200 3X9X40 and laser bore sighted it. while I was checking out the gun I noticed the forend was moving a little so I decided this would be a good time to take it off and sand infront of the lug forward. I reinstalled the fore stock and tightened the screw tight but not to tight I didnt want to strip it. I ran a dollar bill through the forend and I had very little contact. I figured good enough. I went to shoot it the next day I started at one hundred yards as that is were I always start after using my bore sighter. I coud'nt hit nothing after a few shots I decided to move to fifty yards. I shot three shots and nothing I new something was funny so without making any changes I shot one more round and bingo a hit. After one more hitting the same area I adjusted the scope went back to 100 yds and a perfect bulls eye. I had my wife shoot a few times and she was kind of shooting down about three to six inches. She is not used to a regular trigger since she has always deer hunted with my savage .243 with accutrigger. I dint have the time to do any more shooting to play with it that day. I found out that you need to support the gun under the hinge I had it supported at the end of the fore stock with my shooting bench rest were the sling stud is. I need to go out and see now when I have time if i need to spacer the barrel with the oring or bed it heck it might not need anything. The question is what the heck happened with the scope nothing and after a few shots 7 or 8 with no adjustments bingo im hitting. Could this have been something front stock related Im thinking the scope was hung up and with the right amount of jarring it settled were it was supposed to be. But the thing is i watched the cross hairs move when I bore sighted it. Im confused any help would be GREAT  ??? :o >:( :-[ :-\
thanks guys

Not for sure but most of my handies shoot better with a dirty bore. I know it gose against traditional wisdom but I don't clean the bores of my handies until they start shooting bad. 8)

I agree with Bob, I'm a lazy old fart and don't like cleaning.....house or guns.  The other thing I thought of was you didn't mention if you cleaned out the factory gunk or not.

Personally I haven't found any that liked a dirty bore. Most all like shooting form a FOULED bore, but not a dirty one. But every barrel is different and don't doubt that some may like it dirty...  ::)

As for your scope, your are correct, many can and do get "sticky" and don't "Jar" loose until a couple shots or they are adjusted far enough away from there initial settings. As a rule this does not happen with higher quality scopes. At least not nearly as much. Something I have done for years and years is to gently 'tap"  with the back of the screw driver on the turret adj screw after any and all adjustments. Also going a couple clicks past, then returning to where you really want it set can help.

Good luck and good shooting, ;D

CW I beleive you are absolutley correct I just got stumped with it because I have owned many of the elite's 32 and 4200 and have never had one hang up then jar into place. I quess there is a first for everything. As far as a fouled bore Do you recomend a few fouling shots right off the bat before checkng accuracy. If that works for my guns I wont clean them before the season opens after checking zero. I am a big bow hunter but I love my guns a year ago if you said I would own a single shot for myself and not my kids I would have said your on the sauce. A buddy of mine came down from wichita with a new .308 ultra hunter and I fell in love. I couldnt find the ultra hunter any were so I bought the survivor and changed the stocks to pallet. then a week later I find my self coming home with a .204 ultra varmit. I'm getting nervous but I definetly want to find a laminate stock for the survivor they just look so nice better than the pallet. I left my ultra synthetic alone I think its cool that was one reason for buying it.

Yes on the fouling shots.

When I am working up loads, I clean the barrel really good. I like to load 5 bullets of each charge and shoot three for group. That leaves two for fouling shots or siters.

Once I have it sited and have the load I like I may or may not clean it. But before hunting season, I always go and check zero. I like to clean there at the range and fire a couple fouling shots and case the gun for the upcoming season.  This works for me.

The one exception in this whole cleaning thing is my 22 RF's these get cleaned about once a year if I use them a bunch. My competition pistols get cleaned before the season starts in September, then again at new years for the half season break.

I have always heard that once you zero for the hunt do not clean the barrel as it might throw off your zero. I wasn't sure if that was nonsense or not. my guns get the barrels cleaned maybe once or twice a year. I just dont get to shoot that much not as much as i would like. My 17 and my 22's get it vary rarely I just dont really care about the accuracy. well I do on my 17 last year i was shooting p dogs at 250 yds with it and its a HMR i couldnt beleive it I had to compensate big time way up and a little over but once i figured it out oh my i had a blast. I do get very critical about deer rifles zero because I do not  no I hate wounding a deer. When I hit one and dont get a good hit for some reason or another and I dont find it I litteraly get sick and I do mean sick.

THANK YOU CW I WISH YOU DIDNT LIVE SO FAR AWAY SO WE COULD GO THROW SOME LEAD

CW is right about the FOULED bore not a DIRTY bore, I really meant fouled.  I do use the sight it in (or verify sight in) right before season opens, I then don't clean the bore, (I will clean and re-oil the outside)Untill the season is over, Then a good cleaning before going in the safe. 8)

BTW my .357 maxi gets shot a lot, it only gets cleaned about once a year. Prolly 500 to 7 or 800 rounds between bore cleaning and it always shoots the same. My .22 LR bores  only get cleaned at around 5 to 10,000 rounds. Works for me.
