« on: September 20, 2003, 11:27:43 AM »
As a newcomer to the world of lever actions, where can I find links, help, etc. on detail stripping my rifle?  I want to know all that I can.  Thanks in advance to all.
PS  Is there an rear aperture sight available?  Lyman?

Duke,
There is a savage 99 users/collectors site over on "24hour campfire.com" and they can steer you to some more information I have an exploded view drawing from Stevespages that might help you.

Good Luck and let us know how you made out.  That rotary chamber can be a trickey thing to get back together correctly.

Jim:
Thank you kindly for the diagram and links.  I took the rifle to the range today and it was a good news/bad news thing.  Good news is the gun is accurate (1 1/2-2" groups).  The trigger wasn't bad either (heavy, but very little creep or overtravel).  Bad news is that there may be a headspace problem.  The brass looks like it's going to separate just above the case head.  The primers are backing out and starting to extrude into the fire pin hole of the bolt.  This was with factory, Remington, 150 gr. loads.  I took it immediately to a gunsmith who tried some Federal factory stuff and the same thing.  He didn't have the correct headspace gauges. so I left the rifle with him.  He said he may have to set the barrel back to correct the problem.  I sure hope he can fix it.  I really like the rifle.
Best regards,
Doug (with fingers crossed)

With the bad news of incorrect headspace comes the good news of the opportunity to rebarrel in 358 Win!
