My first handi
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:49:27 AM »
Just received my Buffalo Classic  :) I really like the look of this rifle, the bore is BIG I never had a rifle bigger than .30 before. Just a question it is normal to have some electro pencil marks just below the barrel (see photo)?

I dunno if I've seen a "P" before, but the last 3 digits of the serial number should be on that side of the underlug, but you'll have to remove the barrel to see it normally. What are the prefix letters of the serial number on the frame? That will tell you when it was made.

You are now one of the "chosen" since you own a 45/70. I almost feel guilty for not owning one since it seems to have the largest following amoung handi owners. Charlie

Just bought one myself, also my first handirifle and my second 45-70. I think I'm gonna really enjoy it.

Charlie, the simple, most logical thing, is to just get your butt out there and get one ;)  You won't be unhappy.  Mine was my first Handi, and lead to this awful malady.

Yeah... That's the next purchase on my list.  My wife was saying the other day that we need an old style gun to hang on the wall... Guess what I told her would look absolutely gorgeous up there? lol :D :D :D

Not to mention it will make a dandy deer rifle :D :D :D

Its just me buster95 but I don't like kits there is always something in them I don't like. Personally I'd buy a Lee classic cast single stage press As for dies I use five diffrent kinds but Lee will serve you well, I do not like Lees scales,  Get all the books you can.

Go for it, I enjoy reloading almost as much as shooting. 8)

+1 on Bob's advice, I bought the Anniversary kit, but never used all of it, gave parts of it away to newbie reloaders, bought the classic cast press, then upgraded to the 4-hole Classic cast press and have been real happy with it ever since, I use the single stage cast press now just for pulling bullets and with my hydraulic form die, the 4-hole gets all the rest of the work as a single stage press. Replaced the Lee scale with a used Lyman on ebay for $23 shipped, quit using it a couple years ago except as backup and upgraded to a Lyman digital dispenser.

I just checked the barrels I got fitted this summer to my Pardner frame (Sidekick and Tracker II) and they don't have a "P". My BC barrel does and so does the 30-30. So it must not be a passed stamp to indicate it passed QC check.  Could it indicate the barrel can only be mounted on a frame suited to higher pressures?

It's apparently a mark left by the a gunsmith at Gardner, there's only one person that likely knows what it means, Brian56 who is the only gunsmith that transferred to Ilion, but he hasn't posted since last year.  I've sent him PMs and an email, but never got a response.  :-\

Does that mean the "P" means it was made at Gardner?

So far no one has reported any rifle made in Ilion, so yes. Anything with a two letter serial number prefix beginning with N or H was made in Gardner, even those made since May 2008 with CAC(SB1) or CBA(SB2) have all been marked made in Gardner.
