Short throat?
« on: February 21, 2009, 10:11:24 AM »
Yesterday I reloaded my first rounds for the wife's new .270 Ultra Comp.  I started with a C.O.L. of 3.340 - which is the max listed in both sources I checked.  When I test chambered a round as a test, it stuck on the rifling!

These are Remington soft points with a standard contour. Nothing unusual.

I backed of to 3.330 and it cleared the lands.  I loaded the rounds to 3.320 just to be safe.

Any thoughts?

I load the 150gr Nosler Partition in one of 270 UCs, it's into the lands at 3.304", it just depends on the bullet you're loading, The lyman 48th has COLs from 3.090" to 3.340", what bullet weight are you working with? Their 130gr load is 3.250", 140gr is 3.335" and 150gr is 3.285".  My advice is to have a good tool for determining maximum COL in YOUR rifle with each bullet you're loading for, those can be found in the FAQs and Help sticky. ;)

When I started working up loads for my 243 I got a surprise because I was getting pressure signs at what should have been a nice mild starting load. Then I looked at some of Stimpies suggested loads, thanks Quick, and used his COL. It looked like the bullet was seated way deep. What I had done is just seated the bullets the way my die was set for my test loads, and this had undoubtedly cammed the bullets hard into the lands as the action closed. Hopefully I would have felt such a mistake as I closed the action on a bolt gun, but a gun with a hinge don't give you no "feel". Loading for these babies is kind of a whole new world.

I guess I am used to Handi throat being longer than most - this is the first time I have had to go shorter than the spec for a particular cartridge.  All my other Handis have long throats.
