270, 280, or 30-06?
« on: February 23, 2009, 12:20:56 PM »
Hey guys, I'm making my Handi my all around gun. It is a .45-70 with refinished TDC stocks and a peep sight. I'll be ordering up a 3-1/2" 12 gauge barrel with choke tubes, a 28 gauge 22 incher, a Huntsman, and either a .223 or a .22-250. I'd like your opinions on which for all around big game... Should I go at it O'Connor style with the .270, classic with the .30-06, or niche with the .280 Remington..? I'm going to start reloading soon tho beat the cost of .45-70 shells so i'd like to do the same with the new one. Figure it for deer, caribou, moose, etc. Thanks, andy.

I like the 280 too - 26" barrel - you could not go wrong, but only if you reload. The 30-06 is a very good all round cartridge that can do it all. If you are going to reload go 280 if not then the 30-06. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

22-250,30/06, they both can hit hard if you load them up,or tame them down, you can only get so much speed or energy out of the other rounds., either way, you' got a nice arsenal there.

They are all SO CLOSE!

270 if you want something with nostalga

280 or 30-06 for widest bullet selection.

Look at rate of twist and other factors as weight of barrel options and length of barrel.

I think the 280 gets the nod. Then 30-06.

I'd probably go with the .280 my own self...  :-\  Mostly since I like the 7mm's and I don't have a rifle in that chambering...  :-[  But in actuality, with your list of game to be hunted, if I was limited to one rifle (shudder), I'd go with the 30/06.   :P

I'm a big fan of the 270 personally, but it's hard to take anything away from the 30-06.
It generally get's voted the most versatile cartridge for North American game.

I asked the question in the "Medium Bore" forum about the 270 vs. 280...  Most guys who had both said you won't know the difference in the field and neither will the critter you're shooting at.
The 270 and 30-06 ammo is available anywhere in the world that ammo is sold, so that's another plus.

I have the .280 and I love the gun, but if it's all around that your looking for then I'd have to give the 06 the nod.

I think the .280 can do everything an '06 can, with the proper loading. The .280 has the edge on being a long range round. The availablity of bullets in the two calibers can make the difference. I for one love the .280 and dont feel that I'm under gunned on anything smaller than a grizzely

It's hard to beat a 270. It's hard to beat a 30-06. Don't have a 280 so can't say. As far as I'm concerned the 270 and 30-06 are interchangeable out in the field for white tail deer. Never lost a deer with either and knock down power about the same. Save yourself the worry ... get all three!

my choice would be 30-06,great cartridge, good for most North American critters, and one of the most versatile cartridges for reloading due to all the different bullets available

If you want a very accurate rifle that shoots nice and flat and can live with little to no blood trail 70% of the time and lost deer go with the .270.  If you want to ensure you find them everytime go with the 30.06.  No experience with the .280

Greetings,

The .270 and .280 are both effective rounds but they simply can not compare with the versatility of the 30/06. The '06 can be loaded to do more than the other two period ! I have built handloads starting with some 90 gr. plinkers and have made some 220 gr. moose shooters. With the availibility of bullets we have today, a 30/06 can be made to do just about anything you could need. My favorite load for this round is a 165 Hornady SST with Varget powder. Another consideration is over the counter options. The .280 is still not popular while just about every place that sells bullets will have several 30/06 choices. Taking nothing away from the other two, I would not hesitate in getting the '06. Just some practical views to consider.
