Golf Ball Gonne
« on: February 15, 2009, 06:22:27 AM »
I have thought that a gonne would be a lot of fun to shoot so I decided to make one. I made a pattern, cast it in bronze, and finished it on the lathe. The barrel weighs 6 pounds and has a golf ball size bore two calibers deep. The staff is ash and the total length is 61 inches.

You know Max, with every new post you make with photos of your latest finished project, the more I appreciate your skills in casting and machining bronze; looks great!

WOW.

I don't even have to post a picture of mine (so side by side yours will look better).  NICE JOB!

Does it shoot straight down the fairway or hook or slice?

Thanks all for the compliments. Just the doings of an old, retired guy who still likes to do the things he did when younger and not ready to take up the rocking chair just yet.

Tim, I think it was your post on shooting your GB gonne back in 2004 that gave me the idea.

Dom, I agree that it looks like an early grenade launcher, maybe that's where I got the design.

DD, thanks much for the Kewpie. I wonder if I could cast a Kewpie in bronze.

That's beautiful!

I take it from your post that this will be a shooter and not just a showpiece?

Before casting the kewpie in bronze, you will need to talk to Marie Osmond, she hold the right to kewpie.

Had a question, Max...what is the size of the powder chamber in this beautiful  handgonne? Also, what is the depth and diameter of the tiller socket? Again, great job! Thanks, BoomLver

Seacoastartillery, Thanks.

BoomLover, The powder chamber is .625 X 1.25 which should be about right but I can make it larger if needed. The staff socket is 1.10 X 2.25.

Terry C, Thanks. I'm looking forward to shooting it. I like the idea of standing up and loading it like a musket. Should be a lot like shooting my Brown Bess but with larger balls, a bit more recoil, and a much shorter ramrod.
