Building a scaled cannon
« on: February 15, 2009, 04:45:22 AM »
Enjoy reading this site but, have wondered why you couldn't build a small scaled cannon from a BP muzzle loading rifle barrel or even a modern rifle barrel for that matter.  Just curious.

You can build a scale model cannon form a muzzle loading barrel. You would only have to scale to the barrel proportions.  Been done often and with quite nice results.

Go for it an let us see you progress and results.

Looking back thru the various threads and posts, there are examples of people doing that vary thing! Some were made in mini-size using .22 barrels, and there are others. I am drawing up plans to make one from a .17 calibre, but it won't be traditionally barreled as one might expect. Yes, there are example out there, maybe someone could send a few pics? BoomLover

what cal are you planning to use , and what style of gun do you want to build ??
please just remember the one cal rule when you are planning your cannon .
it mean that you have minimum one caliber thick walls surrounding the chamber area .
its also very important bow the breach plug is shaped and fastened to the bore .

Thanks for the replies.  This site has got me wanting to build a scaled cannon.  The question on a BP rifle barrel was for future reference and a future build.  I was wondering about the breech plug for using a BP rifle barrel also.  I have a son that is a machinist and I want to build a golf ball cannon first.  I know once I get started I will have a lot of questions and the guys on this site seem very helpful.  Thanks again.

You are welcome here STexhunter; This is the most recent thread I recall about the subject your curious about. Dominic Carpenter, a sponsor of the board made this miniature of a French 75 for another member using a rifled 12 gauge barrel.

No reason I can see not to use a suitable BP rifle bbl if you keep the loads to what the bbl is intended for.

I built this 'mini-gonne' from a section of .22 LR bbl using a 5/16-18 set screw for the breech plug...

Track of the Wolf sells rifled BP barrel liners if you were to want to use larger tubing for the outer barrel shape but wanted a rifled bore.

STexhunter --

WELCOME to the forum.  One can build cannons from just about anything.  Some are good, some will get you into the national news.

Modern rifle barrels are often made of 4130/4140/...  good steel.  Older ones generally softer.

Shooting golf-balls is a great place to start as the pressures are very low and ammo readily available.  Shooting heavier cannon balls in golf-ball caliber is in another league.

We're looking forward to see you wind through the design processes.
