Need Advice
« on: February 13, 2009, 01:19:34 PM »
I am planning on getting a new barrel for my BC and I wanted some input. I will be shooting deer (whitetail) with the very likely event of a 300 yard shot. I dont handload for either so I will be useing probably Winchester ammo ( unless ya'll think there is a better one) . I have dealt with both caliber's( love both) with bolt guns but never a Handi. Any imput would be much appreciated.

I think with 300 yards being possible I'd look at the .308 or .30-06, Plenty of off shelf ammo being the biggest factor or I would have said .280. .270 will work well to I guess but they just don't trip my trigger and I have great faith in the .30 cals. 8)

7mm-08, 25-06, 270 and 280 would be my choices for that.  7mm-08 will take deer cleanly at that range or longer.  DP

The .30-06 is the standard by which everything else is judged. Must be a reason for that.

All suggestions so far will mirror mine.
One thing I will add. If I knew I was buying this gun expressly for long range deer. I would choose the 25-06. If those "deer" included mule deer and caribou, I would then choose the 280. Just personal opinion.

Its been said if it cant be done with the 30-06... It likely cannot be done.  ;D

+1
The 30'06 has to be one of the most versatile cartridges ever made. The 270 Win. and
the 25'06 are great calibers, but they won't shoot a 180 grain bullet. It might be a moot
point if you are just hunting deer, but the '06 has been around kickin' butt for many years
for a reason: It works.

My vote is on the 7mm08 for less recoil and great performance.

Of all calibers mentioned the 708 will likely be the least recoil.

Have never considered the 7mm08 but I will. I have accually considered the Hornady , but they are a bit outta my price range cause I plan on shooting a LOT when the weather( and when I decide what I want and get it) gets better so I will be more prepared for next deer season.

I would vote on the 25-06.  Plenty of punch out to 400yds, low recoil as compared to 30-06, and accuracy with factory Hornady 117BTSP are excellent with mine and Tims and I paid $21 a box.  Buy two boxes sight in and see how you do.  If no good at least you got some good brass if you do decide to reload later.  Plus longer tube will compliment the BC. My 2cents worth. ;)

Jerry

PS also excellent choice if you decide to do some varmiting also!

Ditto here, but for those reasons I vote .280

for  deer at out to 300 yards I would suggest a 30-06, .280, or 25-06. All great flat shooting full sized cartridges. The .308 is also something to be considered....<><....:)

The best advice i can give you, if your on a budget, is get the most common caliber available.

.308 - minimal recoil / higher on the price range of affordibility , match ammo availible
.30-06 - heaviest recoil of the 3 - fairly inexpensive - match ammo availible
.270 - medium recoil of the 3, inexpensive.

Also I have seen a .243 rack up some kills at about 300.  But thats a very debatable caliber.  Also my favorite.
