T/C Contender Carbine 223's First Coyote
« on: February 03, 2009, 05:30:13 PM »
I spent the holidays in Alberta, Canada visiting my in-laws with my wife and son, I took my T/C Contender carbine in 223 loaded with H322 and 40gr V-Max bullets @ an average velocity of 3380fps from the 21" factory barrel.

I walked about 500 yards across the road from the in-laws house and sat down beside a fence line facing into the wind the temp was -34C which if I remember right is about 0 degrees F plus the wind was blowing... Brrrrr...

I started calling on my Primus Ki-Yi hand call and after about 10 seconds max of calling this fellow popped up at the far end of the pasture which was about 440 yards away running as fast as he could towards me.

He sat down about 40 yards in front of me so figuring that was close enough I squeezed off the shot which resulted in the coyote dropping instantly.

I shot 2 other coyotes on the trip but didn't have my camera along these 2 were longer shots app 130 - 150 yards I hit both in a broadside chest shot each spun a circle a couple of time and dropped.

I also missed 2 :( I guessed the range at around 200 yards and when I went back later I lasered the distances and both were closer to 350 yards away being from BC where there are mountains and trees everywhere I didn't realize how tough it is to judge distance on a snow covered prairie...

Good job on the coyotes.  Always nice to be able to do a little hunting when visiting the relatives.  In some cases mabe a LOT of hunting.   ;D

Interesting how an additional 150 yards will drop your bullet below a coyotes vitals.  I never forget that there is more space around a coyote than their vitals occupy.

Nice job, I gotta tell you, you've got more tolerance for the cold than I do.  BTW, -34C is -29F.  Way too cold for this old boy.

Hi

Looks like the kind of hunting conditions I have to enjoy. Just a quick question. What did you use to camo your rifle? Tape or skin or .....what? ???
It looks well suited for the enviroment. One more question ;D. What does it all weigh, all set up, the way you have it?
Looks like a nice carry rig.

It is a reusable camo wrap that comes in different camo colors very easy to wrap on and off it is self adhesive but isn't tape.

I have never really weighed the rifle but my guess would be just over 5 lbs and is very easy to carry.  Normally I find a very light rifle is hard to take accurate free hand shots but I don't have this issue with the Contender.

No none of the bullets exited I was very happy with their performance and they are extremely accurate out of this rifle giving me 1/2 by 1 3/4" 10 shot 200 yard groups and the best 3 shot 300 yard group I have done is 3/4" X 1 1/2" with two of the shots hitting in the 1" bulleye.
