Home made stock
« on: February 13, 2009, 04:50:49 PM »
Here is the stock I made for my H&R Ultra Varmint .223. I prefer thumbhole or pure pistol grips on my guns/crossbows. I got a great deal on a laminate monte carlo stocked gun so I decided to try and make my own.

I am in no way a carpenter and have very basic tools. Here are the steps to make this particular stock. (for-end stock is to come).

The wood is baltic birch. I used a piece of 3/8 sandwhiched by 7/8 thick pieces. I cut the design in each sheet out with a Jigsaw and glued them together with stainble, Elmers glue. Once they were glued, I formed the basic shape of the stock with a 4 inch angle grinder with a sanding disc on it. Once the basic shape was there , I sanded the bumps out by hand, gave it a final sanding and stained it with MINWAX EBONY stain. 5 coats of Tung oil later, it was ready for the gun. i have to send out a huge thanks to CWlongshot. He saved my bacon by getting the button head screw for me when I was unable to locate one in my area.

Anyhow, here is the stock. I will be making a custom for-end to match it. Unfrtunately, my camera has a bit of a "fish-eyed" lens when I take close up picture so the outline o fthe stock appears t be somewhat warped. not so on the real stock.

That's some pretty nice work. The only problem is now you'll keep looking at it and decide you can do better. Next time you'll refine your work a little to give it a little here and take off a little there.

In Short you now have a new illness... Ha Ha Ha!!!

WOW!!  GREAT JOB!!!!!!

I haven't completely made and butt stocks myself. I have refinished and modified a few. But I have made a couple forends though. They are pretty easy.
My trouble is I'm impatient and as soon as I see a finish coming, I'm done... dont want to wait for the ummpteen coats required for a really nice finish... ::)

OH, I see you have walked this road before. You would be correct. I am already drawing out plans for the next one ;)

CW, the only way I could force myself to let the oil dry was to take the gun out hunting. Made sense to me at the time and considering I shot my first two yotes with it yesterday, I feel I made the right decision. ;D
