I'm going to try my luck on a boar next week with a 600 JDJ. I'll put up some pics if all goes well.

Nice looking round.  Will you be kind enough to describe the load that you use, the penetration that the round is supposed to obtain and your general impression of this round?

What was you inclination to obtain the 600 JDJ?  Does it meet your expectations?

Regards,

Jay

Thnaks Jay,
I had JDJ @ SSK build this for me on a Ruger #1 Tropical. I wanted the most powerfull rifle I could get shat is still shootable and light enough, mine wieghs 10.5 lbs. with a Leupold 1.5x5 Vari x 111, that you could carry all day. I looked long and hard at the 577 but settle on the 600 which is a wildcat based on the 577 blown out to 620 diameter. The load I'm using is a 900gr. Woodleigh Weldcore pushed by 135grs of Win. 748 to 1950 fps. That gives me just short of 8000 ft./ pds of energy with good accuracy. Shot into wet newspapers gave me massive expansion and damage to the target. Seeing this round impact is quite spectacular. It penetrated about 30", which in newspaper is a lot. The would channel was incredible. I will put up a pic of that bullet later.

More later---Joe

I don't know what happened to your reply above Jay, but I read it earlier in the day. Thank you for the kind words. Below is the bulllet recoved from wet newspaper and the rifle. The bullet expanded to 1.250" and weighed 856 grs. afterward. JD and I had several conversations before he built mine. He hasn't built a lot in 600. He's done many in 577. It's all about recoil in the 600 and the bullet selection isn't as big as the 577. It's more involved fireforming and working up loads as there's not much info out there to go on. This is definitely not a caliber for a novice reloader. I had Dan at Mountain Molds make me a custom bullet mold with a 90% meplat at 800 grs. in weight. It shoots great cast from wheel weights, tumble lubed, and loaded over 70 grs. of IMR 4198 with pillow filler on top of the powder. Speed is 1475 fps. so it makes a fun, hard hitting, mild recoiling load. I'm really looking forward to a big tusker.    Joe

Joe, the more that I read the more that I know that I want one, oops I mean that I need one   ---   I'm certain that you know what I mean.  The additional pictures 'are telling of the performance' of the round.

My former message indeed disappeared, it very likely has to do with a young nephew of mine testing his skills on my keyboard, perhaps another future Bill Gates, I will ask Bill a.k.a., Graybeard if he can restore my post.

After your hunting season and the holidays settle down perhaps we can speak over the phone to discuss some of the finer details of such a project.

Happy holiday to you my friend,

Jay

Hi,

I purchased my 600 JDJ rifle from Mr. Jones in 2001. At the time he said it was custom gun #4.
The rifle is khromed. I have #40 900 gr. jacketed, #40  beartooth 1040 gr. LFN, #18 brass, I do not reload.
The rifle has only fired #10 rounds in 8-yrs. The condition of the rifle is 100%. Can I purchase rounds for this rifle? As of 2009. what is the value of this rifle?

                                                                         Thank You,

                                                                         Fred

Wow, that is impressive.
Its not often that I see a cartridge that makes me look at my 45-70 with 405gr cast and think "that 45-70 is small".  ;D

Let uis know how it works out, and if there is enough pig left to eat!
