« on: November 20, 2008, 04:08:27 PM »
found 6 very large containers of bb's at a yard sale for a buck and am wondering if there is any reason they would'nt work as steel shot in shotgun reloading? Your thoughts are welcone

I remember seeing something saying not to use BB, something to do with the steel hardness.

That being said anything you can get in a hull will fire, but it will be unknown what  it will do to the pressures and it could damage your barrel

A BBgun has a smooth bore and they don't damage it. I don't see why it would not work. Regards, Byron

On the surface the idea seems plausible. Just make darn sure you use the proper wads for steel shot with steel shot load data and in a barrel/choke designed for steel shot use.

Dont do it unless you like to tear stuff up. BB's are way harder than "steel" shot (which is soft iron)

I also saw a stern warning against this in one of my loading manuals. They too talked about the hardness of the shot. Actually I think it is BS, like it's going to make any difference whether the shot is a little harder or not, steel is steel. BUT  I learned not to fool around and take liberties with the steel shot load recipes. This is one area of reloading where I slavishly follow the manual.

Put your BBs in a Daisy and go kill some grasshoppers.
