Question about 30-30 load
« on: February 02, 2009, 03:02:18 PM »
Well I have tried every dealer that I know in Arkansas and have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to buy a 243 and then send it to have a 30-30 barrel put on it since none of the dealers can get one.  All of their distributers are out of them.  So I am going to look tomorrow and bring home a new gun tomorrow.  I assume that most everyone on here has had good luck with the barrel program. Since I already handload for a 243 and Marlin 30-30, I want to start finding out what most of you guys are shooting in your 30-30s.  I ordered some of the Hornady Flex tips for the Marlin 30-30 and plan on using them in the H&R 30-30.  Do any of you shoot any other 30 cal bullets in your 30-30 such as a Sierra game king or match king.  I also am looking to find any load data for the new 160 grain flex tips.  I have had good luck with Winchester 748 in the lever action with 150 grain sierra bullet.  I use IMR4895 for my 308 and 243.  I will buy new powder if I need to so any information you may have will be gratly appreciated.  I looked through the FAQs and if I missed this information just let me know.  Thanks.  Doug

Hornady provides data for the FTX bullets, all ya gotta do is contact them using their contact page on their website, but I already did for ya!! ;D

My 30/30 Barrel is "Finicky" just like all my other barrels.
When I first got mine it shot WInchester factory 170s extremely well and would NOT shoot Remington factory 170s at all . I tried  over 40 loads with  the 125s and 130s and could get none of them to shoot well at all. I did get some 170 FP Speers to well with Varget .   Tried several 150 Sptizers both flat base and  boat tails and could get neither to shoot well . By chance I happened to find a box of Seirra ROUND NOSE game kings and  tried them and it was the first bullet to shoot one inch or less consistantly . It is now ,my bullet of choice for hunting
CCI BR2 Primers with 33.5 Varget .
I have not Tried any of the Hornady Soft tipped bullets BUT I am going to try the 160s soon to see how they work.

I have shot a lot of different types of bullet in my handi 30-30 and got good results with Rem 150 Gr SP-RN W/C. My son gave me a box of Speer 170 Gr HCFN.
. I use 30 gr 2230. These bullets hold a 1 in group at a 100 yards, even with a real warm barrel. I put a heavy forarm and stock with a mercury recoil suppressor so the recoil is very light. I only use this gun for target and fun shooting.

If you can get the Flex Tips handloaded or factory to shoot in your gun more than likely it should be the one you use for hunting. As was mentioned Hornady Website has the info.

I have got my Topper 058 .30-.30 to shoot very well with just about all bullets that were 150-170 grains regardless of maker no luck with the lighter ones. I use Imr 3031 BLC2 and IMR 4350.

I am getting up for the flex tips and if I can get a handload to get close to factory ballistics that would be outstanding. However, I really do not think I can as the proprietary powders used by Hornady are a special blend.

I will be Flex Tip all the way in all my lever guns and the Topper if at all possible. Let me know how you do with your .30-.30 and Flex Tips

Because of being a single shot you can use any .308 bullet you want, That kinda closes the powder gap I like to stick with heavier bullets myself.

I have always like winchesters 748 for my 30-30 loads. I wont post my load as its max has changed so many times thru the years its not funny. Now it is above published maximums. But 30 years ago it was 4Gr's BELOW maximums... go figure????? Any way for me its always 170 gr and of them I like the Hornadys best. Sierra is a close second.

I picked up a box of the FTX bullets and loaded up 5 with that 748 load. I seated it to fit my chamber so its long, actually taking up less case space then the various 170's by quite a bit.

As far as locating a 30-30 call Remington and let them do the work for you. Let them tell you who has them!! They know who got what in what shipment right?? Then tell your dealer, go there and you get your handi!! I didn't like it when I found out a customer did that to us at the GS. But I also knew it meant someone here isn't doing there job, finding guns for or customers!!  If you dealer cannot locate one (sounds like he cannot) and the manufacturer can tell you where and who has one. Your dealer isn't working hard enough to find you what you want!!
