SB1 / SB2 Differences
« on: January 28, 2009, 03:28:28 PM »
Could someone please tell me the differences between the SB1 and SB2 receivers. Also, if a barrel is purchased from the factory can they fit it to only one of these receivers or both? Thanks

Basically the sb1 is a shotgun receiver, the sb2 a centerfire rifle receiver.  H&R will not fit a centerfire barrel to a sb1 shotgun receiver.  The shotgun sb1 has a larger firing pin hole.  However, there are new sb1 rifle receivers that H&R will only fit the 357mag and 44mag rifle barrels(and also shotgun barrels, ex. 10ga.)

Now, new info has surfaced that H&R may fit these 2 (357-44mag) lower pressure rifle barrels to other sb1 receivers.  You must call and give them your serial # to know for sure.

I think I'm correct on these points, Quick will know for sure.

Some say that there is no difference between the two receivers but after putting a Rockwell "C" gage tester on several diffrent frames, the sb2 is definantly cast of a harder alloy.

The factory will fit barrels to one receiver but there is a chance that it will fit another receiver just fine OR it could be a loose sloppy fit or could even be so tight that it wont allow for a lock up at all.

The differences are explained in the FAQs and Help sticky, complete with pics, H&R will fit 1987 and later made SB1 frames with 357mag and 44mag rifle barrels. SB1 frames are ductile(cast) iron, SB2 are investment cast alloy steel.

I've made up my mind to stick with SB2 frames on everything to avoid possible screwups by myself or someone else down the road.  I have 2 SB1 frames now that I plan to replace with SB2s.  One is on a huntsman and the other a .410.  I also have a stainless '06 ejector  barrel that I plan to replace with the same in extractor.

I KNOW tyhis is a shotgun question and I should just call H&R but sincce were talking about this......"revbc".........you mention 10 Gage.  I have a Model 176 10 Gage 36" Full, that I believe was a product H&R offered in about 1974 or 1976.  I got it for Goose hunting here in the South Coast of Massachusetts ....(that or light aircraft  ;D ;D....which are still plentiful but not recommended to shoot at ::) ::)) .......Geese while plentiful are hard to get access to as most good spots are under lease these days >:( :'( :-\ :-\ :-\
Anyway, its been sitting in my safe for 20 years!!!!!  Does this mean I could have either a new 12 or 20 gage barrel fitted to this?  I had been under the impression that the 10 Gage was a "special" animal and wasn't a part of the barrel exchange program.

H&R1871 won't fit a barrel to ANY frame made before 1987, it must have a two letter serial number prefix starting with N or H which denotes NEF or H&R.

I created a spreadsheet that lists each one of my frames and what the designation from the factory was. (I called while they were still in Gardner and got the info before big green lost it). It has helped a ton as it is stuck to the safe door.

Knowing my kids and grandkids, they'd never look at it.  "We're goin" shootin"

I'll stick with the SB2s.
