Gunstocksinc.?
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:04:01 PM »
I need some thoughts on the quality and fit of the stocks for the Handi rifles i.e., the new stinger and the high cheek rollover model in particular.

Thanks

I have had two of them. I got both from other members here. Both where nicely made and easily finished. Actually the second one was already finished when I got it!!

CW, great pics, and timely as I'm going to be ordering from GI very soon.  I can't decide between the stinger, the rollover or the monte carlo though, and hope you don't mind a few questions:

How comfortable is the thumbhole stock on the stinger?  Fit your hand good?  I've held some thumbholes in gun shops that were perfect, and some that were real clunkers.  Ordering one without being able to hold it first has me spooked...

If you had to in a pinch, how hard would it be to shoot the stinger left handed?

Do you feel less recoil with the stinger, or is it easier to hold on target?

Since the bolt connecting the stock to the receiver is in the thumbhole (right?) is there still a draw bolt hold drilled in the main part of the stock for the steel bar for weight balancing?

Thanks :)

Sure, love to help. many of your questions are more personal. Meaning my hand is different them yours and what I like may also be different. But I'll tell you what I think...

Its fairly comfortable. But my hands are large and my thumb muscle and knuckle hit before I get a comfortable grip. This could easily be opened up, but it would necessitate completely refinishing the stock. Not something I want to undertake at this time. Overall,  I like the H&R thumbholes better.

I guess you could do it, but it wouldn't be easy or comfortable.

Yes, its heavier and has a higher comb. Keeping the barrel more in line with your shoulder. So muzzle rise and perceived recoil are both reduced.

YES. I'm sure this too could be done. But remember this stock already is heavier then any handi stock, so adding weight will not be what first comes to mind.

Currently I do not have this stock mounted on a rifle. I find it a bit too cumbersome and awkward as a hunting stock. It is nicely finished. It brings a heft not usually felt in a H&R and I do like it.  But its not fast to get to the hammer and opening the action required some additional adjustments. I used to shoot allot of offhand targets and the anschutz style grip is nice for that.

I think it would be fine for a target gun or maybe a long range varminter. But if fast target acquisition is in order, you need to look for a different stock.

That stock just looks so big and bulky on an H&R. I would love to have the blank of wood they used but would reshape it to something a little more fitting to that gun.

I am guess that instead of the the bolt being in the thumbhole, that this stock uses the normal 4" bolt burried inside the wood?

I am curiously watching this thread as I am in the process of building a stock for my new Varmint Ultra .223.

I would love to see some pics of the H&R thumbhole stocks from different angles to compare it to what you have there.

By ordering one of these you should be able to make it fit however you want. I've still got to finish a Stinger and am redoing a walnut rollover . As CW said they are quite heavy but they work very well for sitting at a portable bench watching the red mist of a PD that just went POP!!! One's going on the 204 and the other is going on the 225winchester. Kurt

I have both and I like them. I didnt think I would like the Stinger, it does look a bit bulky to me but like the way it feels.  The Stinger was already finished when I got it, but I the High Rollover is to high for me but its a unfinished stock. I will reshape it a little and it will be good. I like the Palm Swell on the stocks. I also preferr their Varmit Forends. Overall cost is a little higher but it really dresses up the Handi.

Thanks, very helpful input.  I'm actually looking to put this on a 12g USH that I'm having a smokeless .50 ML barrel made for.  The gun is already 9+ pounds with the laminated montecarlo stock, so weights not too much of a concern.  I've hunted successfully with my USH for 5+ years, have never found the weight to be a limiting issue.

Thanks again :)
