Ejection problems....revisited
« on: December 03, 2009, 06:41:49 AM »
I posted a few months ago about my .270 handi having some problems ejecting.  I did some chamber polishing as well as the "BB Trick" to make the ejection spring a little stronger.  I have spent some time with the gun at the range and it is shooting great...probably shoots better than I do.  Ejection problem seemed to be solved, until I took the rifle out for the PA Deer opener this week.  Now it seems that the gun will not eject the UNFIRED shells.  Out of about 2 boxes of shells shot at the range I don't think I had a single failure to eject.  When I put an empty case in the chamber it ejects fine.  This leads me to believe that its the actual bullet that is causing issues...any ideas?  Or am I destined to have to put the "ejector notch" in the side of the chamber as mentioned in one of the stickies?

Thanks guys...

If they're handloads, maybe the COL is too long, jamming the bullet into the lands will cause a failure to eject.

CAREFULLY push one of the rounds out of the barrel with a cleaning rod and see if there are rifling marks on the bullet.

Shooting Remington Factory loads.  Just chambered one, it did not eject, and when pushed out there were some very light markings from the rifling on the base of the bullet just above the case.  Not sure if this should be a problem though.  I happened to have a box of Winchester ammo also, and when I chamber a round of Win. ammo is ejects fine...A little disappointing seeing how I have the gun sighted in with Rem. ammo and if shoots well...

Are the rifling marks consistent all the way around, or just on one side? If it's all the way around, it sounds like the ammo is loaded too long or the throat is cut too short. You can create a small notch in the chamber edge as shown in the FAQs that you can use a pocket knife tip to help the round out of the chamber, it would keep you shooting without much work.  ;) The other alternative is to return it to H&R for repair or have a gunsmith throat it, but that will likely change how it shoots.

I had to go one step further than the BB trick with my 30-06. I found a small cap screw that put more pressure on the spring than the BB did, and it was just enough to make a real difference. I haven't had any ejection problems since. I would think that you  could put a piece of steel rod in a drill chuck, and file down one end to fit inside the spring, and cut the "head" end off to suit. Just a thought.

I would probably send it back to H&R for a fix after the season is over...but...it is a barrell that I traded for on GBO, so I'm not sure that they would work on it.  I'm intrigued by the idea of adding a piece of steel to make the spring even stronger, but I'm not sure what diameter would work.  Anyone have an idea?

I'm thinking that the spring may be getting weak. The loaded shell is heavier.

Of coarse extractor conversion WILL CURE THIS, if your set on keeping your ejector try a new spring.

Come on Petemi, you pawned that old 45/70 barrel w/ejector off on me, and it never fails. At the range i just open her up all the way
and catch the empty with my left hand, ofcourse i played lots of baseball (years ago) ;D :-*

Yes Rex, you're correct...that one always worked.  I guess if it didn't, I'd have told you about it when we traded.  I just musta flunked High School baseball, cause I don't like fielding them.  I'm glad you're happy with it.  I think they, both yours and mine, are shooters.

A new spring wouldn't hurt, but I always add either a BB in front of it if I don't make a "guide" for it with a screw to help keep it straight, a small machine screw works, the shank has to fit inside the spring and the head has to fit in the ejector housing, a #6 socket head machine screw is perfect, it can only be so long tho or it doesn't allow the ejector enough travel.

Run a couple of dry patches up into the leade in the throat (first 1/2" of rifling) and back out a few times..see if your patch is snagging on anything or comes out fouled..If it does..clean the chamber and leade and see if that corrects the problem.. If you have a tight throat & leade on your barrel this will happen..I have had several boxes of factory ammo that wasn't quite right before..some were loaded long..others were loaded short..and some were loaded way too hot as well..It doesn't happen a-lot..but is always a possibility.

Last thing I would do is send anything back to the factory. sounds like you got a throat that 90% of us wish we could have...with you being able to get the bullet to the rifling and it shooting well do not let the butchers @H&R anywhere near it. Do what Mac suggests, work on the spring cut a notch. If it's all factory ammo get your mic out and check for the differances in the bullets find the shorter one's that eject use them for hunting and use the others at the range with the notch.I just got NO faith with anyone at H&R right now.
