The New SB1 357maxi range report
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:58:02 AM »
Got my sb1 357 reamed to maxi.  Took her out with some handloads.  All I had was some 2400 so I used the 158gr SP bullets.  The maxi shows promise even though I think she'll do better with a different powder and bullet combo.  Here's one pic, I could show the rest of the target but you couldn't make heads nor tails out of all my markings on it.  Between 16.8 and 17.2 grs of 2400 showed the best promise for accuracy.  You'll see the D load, it's probably the best I can do with a 4x scope at 100yds.

The 158 357mag loads were a real disappointment.  I think some were an 18 inch group, go figure Huh

Sorry for the shadows.  (Not to confuse anyone, this is the new sb1 rifle receiver, that I deemed safe to ream per another thread discussion)

Looks pretty good.  Thanks for the report.  I'm strongly considering doing the same

Bobby

If you can lay your hands on some 180g cast give them a try in the mag cases , with a max load of the 2400 , my 357 shoots a sweet little cloverleaf with those loads .

Down on the cast bullet forums with Veral Smith he says that the 180 grain bullet he makes is the best for getting all the good out of a .357 that it has to give.
If you're gonna be stupid ya gotta be tuff

I agree that at 100 yards that group is pretty decent!

Try some 180 grainers as many have varified the fact, on several threads that the .357 maxi loves the heavier bullets.

I may just check out that cast bullet forum!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
