L.A.R. 45 Mag
« on: August 02, 2003, 10:41:43 AM »
L.A.R. Grizzly

I run across one of these in a local pawn shop today in 45 mag caliber. I understand that L.A.R. is no longer manufactoring these guns and isn't offering waranty suport. This gun seemed to have a 6.5" barrel with two mags. I thought the asking price of $1080 is a little steep. The gun looks to have less than a box or so of ammo put through it. It's real minty the clips dont even show wear.

The gun seemed to have a good balance to me but the grip is awful wide and narrow.

What do you think about this gun? What kind of performace is delivered from the 45 Mag?

I think this gun was a Mk II.

Thanks
Scott

TScottO,
They are nice accurate guns.  The $1080 is a little high, but these are starting to be snatched up by collectors.  I'm not sure if parts are available for these, so you may want to check into that before spending the cash.  As far as performance, just think of it as a 44 Magnum with a little bigger bore.  The recoil on these pistols is not for those unnacustomed to magnum handguns.  You can check out this link to see what they're going for on GunsAmerica.  http://www.gunsamerica.com/fast.cgi?guncat=1889

Why not considering to buy a Desert Eagle in .50 AE? The cost of a new one under $1100 as street's price. Parts are available, accuracy is unbeatable,... I know it isn't a 1911 frame but it is a great gun that I'm happy to own.

Just my 0.02 cts.

TScottO,

I have a L.A.R. Grizzly in 45 Win Mag, 10mm, 45 A.C.P.,357 Mag and 357/45 Grizzly Win Mag.  I enjoy this gun more that any that I own except for the facts that follow:  I wrote to L.A.R.  for spare parts, load data (357/45), and information about the pistols and all of the interchangeable barrel kits that were supposedly made for it.  I got a letter back from them stating that they had nothing to offer me.  Not even information on the product that they were selling in 1998.  And that was about a year or two ago (that I wrote the letter).  Very disappointing to say the least.  This is the most accurate magnum pistol that I have ever shot (45 Win Mag only at this time).  But, if you break something, then you will have to get spare parts for it custom made with a broken sample.  The price on yours is a little high for a used one, but they first came out at around $!500.00.   I know where there might still be some .357 Magnum magazines if they haven't sold them.  They were asking $65.00 apiece for them new when I last checked.  There might also be a 45 A.C.P. conversion kit available.  If you like big bangs and a good hunting pistol, then this is a good one to pick except for the above mentioned problems.
Let me know if you are still interested in the accessories.

I looked into the 45 Win Mag. It's basically a 44 magnum in terms of performance. The trick is to find good game bullets that will chamber properly in an auto.  The only load data for it that I've seen has been for full metal jacket bullets.  There was a write-up in one of the magazines some time ago that showed good accuracy from the gun, but you should get some first-hand advice on it.  I'm a bit concerned about the durability of the gun.  Durability was a problem with the AutoMags.  Desert Eagle makes an auto that fires 44 magnums.

L.A.R. made a 44 mag and a 50AE pistol.

Also I use Rainier "hex" hollow points jacketed bullets for the accurate load.

Thanks Dutch for sharing your resource with me. I went back to my local pawn shop to try and make a deal. The guy was unreasonable and wouldn't budge one red cent. Apparently he didn't want to sell this gun.

I thought the gun was well built and would have been fun to shoot. I prefer revolvers but this one appealed to me because you don't see them around too often. Maybe one day it will be a little easier to find used guns at used gun prices.

Good luck and be safe,
Scott
