Tried out your advice..good a real good shooter now!
« on: January 19, 2009, 01:45:35 PM »
I have a H&R Topper Model 058 with the .30-.30 Win and 20 gauge 3 inch interchangable barrels. I got all new springs and using the infor on this site was able to install all of them and slick up the trigger pulls and over all ruffness in the trigger and action assemblies.

Took her out today well over a hundred rounds fired in the .30-.30 and 40 rounds in the 20 guage. Not one failure to fire gun locks up very tight and the trigger pull and all other funtions are very slick and smooth.

Accuracy is just about 1 1/2 iches in the rifle open sighted at 100 yards with 150 grain factory loads. That ain't bad at all...I am very pleased myself. The twenty shot real well and patterned nice at 40 yards...that barrell is a modified choke.

This gun sat around since 1978 when I bought it. I had immeadiate problems with failure to fire..turnes out the hammer spring was very weak. I had given some thought to giving it away and or throwing it away..now I am very happy with that rifle and shotgun combo.

I want to thank all here for the information about these guns that you all have provided and the information on how to improve the trigger pull  and slick up the action was very helpfull.

I intend to still hang around on this site as I own many rifles, shotguns as well as pistols and have be a dedicated hunter and outdoorsman for a long long time.

You fellas have real good informative site here and I plan to try to learn a little more from you all.

Thanks for the information,

Hey Redtail, 1.5" groups with a good scope ain't bad but with open sights I'd say it's phenomenal!

Glad to hear you got the Topper back in action.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Yes sir, I indeed will be on the lookout for another Topper at all the pawns shops and asking friends. That group was from almost 60 year old eyes off the bench with the rifle bagged up nice and firm. Offhand I was around 3 to 4 inches.

I am so glad i was able to bring her back to life. Like many I had started my long quest of buying one gun after the other as I could afford them. It not being the hottest or the newest was just about forgotten.

Now that I have gone through all the stages a reloader goes through...you know what I mean.. buy a 30.06 and immeadiately try to make it perform like a .300 Win Mag. Load it to the max!

Well times have changed and I do try to get a better load, both power and accuracy wise, I do indeed enjoy the challenge of dialing in a rifle.

Now if I want a certain level of performance for certain game I simply buy a caliber that will provide it and keep the loads within reason. The debates of one caliber or another really are for the campfires and a little whiskey.  Thats what makes the quest so enjoyable the campfires with good friends in the great outdoors.

Got me quite a few firearms along the way some real real good shooters some not and enjoyed hunting and shooting them all. Learned alot and still need to learn more.

It has been an enjoyable journey I hope my sons and grandsons take that journey. That little H&R will be given to my four year old grandson and I hope that it will spark that love for the outdoors that I have. It will be one of the greatest gifts I could ever give him and hopefully, set him off on that endless quest for the perfect rifle.

Welcome Redtail1949,

My first H&R was a 30/30 & 20 ga Topper combo. One of those "I wish I never sold it.." guns!

But I have another (see my avatar pic).

Love them Toppers...    ;D

Cheers

Congratulations Redtail!   This site has helped me too with a problematic .243.   I was able to follow the FAQ's and individual advice and get this thing shooting tight again.   It went from 3" down to 1 1/2" scoped at 100yds.   Thanks to GB and all the brethren here!
