Rimfire to centerfire ream
« on: January 20, 2009, 03:22:57 PM »
For instance, if I wanted to ream my 22 mag barrrel to 218 Bee or maybe a hotter 22 like the Zipper and fit it to an SB2 frame.
I know RF and CF barrels are different steels.
Is it safe using a rimfire barrel for this?

I do not know if it is safe or not.  I have done 6 now, one to .17 Remington, four to 17 Remington Fire Ball and one to .22 Hornet and none have blown up, but then the day isn't over yet.  Larry

I'd think the worst that could happen would be that it would wear out faster.

There have been several people that have done just that, reamed a 22 Mag barrel to some center fire. Larry has mentioned he has done several I know that Richard (Stimpylu32) has done at least one to a 218 bee and I think maybe one or two others. Keep in mind that not only is the steel milder, it has a twist rate of 1-16" so you are going to have to use lighter weight bullets so they stabilize. You will also have to fit your barrel to your frame. I think I am capable of doing this, but I just have not done it. All my barrels have been factory fitted. I do not think that there would be an issue with it blowing up, unless the case was loaded up beyond safe levels. It could be a bomb - but it could be in a 4140 steel barrel too. It has been debated here before. You might consider sending in your frame to have a 22 Hornet barrel fitted and then ream it to what ever. You will get a 1-12" twist rate barrel with 4140 steel and be factory fitted. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

I'd like to see a revival of some of the old rimfire rounds of yesterday or at last modern equivilents of them. Something in .25 would make a super squirrel thumper and small game round and a .32 would be a nice small game/predator round. They could load them with cast bullets without a gas check and should be able to make them as cheap or cheaper than the little .17s rimfires that are all the rage these days.

I wish we could hunt squirrels with the smaller centerfires.  It isn't legal here.

Or you can have one stubbed and get a 17 FB with a Twist rate of 1 in 9" with a bull barrel made of 4140 carbon steel.  ;D
