223 ammo
« on: January 21, 2009, 07:44:32 AM »
1. I have read the break-in procedures in the FAQ. Some good advice there. One thing that is not mentioned is the type of ammo to use. I am getting my new 223 Ultra Varmint tomorow and was wondering if one type of round is better for breaking in than another?

2. I susect my barrel will be 1:9 twist. I am planning rounds in the 55gr range. Anyone have any suggestions on type? It will be mainly a coyote gun with 250 yards or less. What is a good round for killing em dead but not necessarily blowing the hides all to hell (if I can help it).

I am so excited to get this gun!!!

  Desert ,

I would think a V max from hornady or any number of other "varmint grenades" would do the trick ,Small hole going in and *po0F*  bullet evaporates on the insides..

What i can tell you not to use is a 270 WSM launching a 130 gr Advanced Technologies bullet at them ..... Yeeeeahhhh IT Pretty Much Canoes A Yote Out  ;D

BTW do you reload or buy factory ammo ? If reload is the case you have a never end of options .. If you buy factory  , I had real good results from the Fiochhi Extrema 40 gr V-MAX
from a 1 in 9  20 inch AR bull barrel  , Havent tried it out of my 223 bull barreled handi .. If I get a chance to I'll let you know how they do ..
Also wouldnt be a bad idea to surf over to the "Alaska hunting" forums here at GBO and ask those boys what they use on foxes and wolves up there to save the pelts..

As for break in ... Well i wouldnt spend an arm and a leg on that ammo ... Get some winchester white box 55 gr or equivilent and start the sighting in process while breakin the barrel in.

Another thing.. Your 1 in 9 might favor the heavier bullets for superior accuracy .. I get groups with the Hornady TAP line ammo that covers with a dime to penny @ 100 yards out of my 223 handi

Hope this helps a little .. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions ,
