454 Raging Bull questions
« on: August 25, 2003, 11:13:41 AM »
I went with a 454 Raging Bull in the 8 3/8 barrel as that is the only one that can be bought in CA.  I have a few questions:

1)  Is there any negative comments about running .45 LC ammo through it?

2)  I ordered the Taurus mount for it.  What rings are best?

3)  What holster is best to carry it, probably unscoped to start.

4)  With the scope mount on, can I still use the iron sights?

Thanks all!!

on the 45 colt ammo- dont do it.   some will tell you o.k., but it isnt. the pressures of the 454 after 45 colts have been shot WILL cause problems.
which rings are best are a matter of opinion.
a bianchi holster fits my gun better than any others i have seen.
and no, you wont be able to use iron sights with the scope mount on.

btw, 12 grains of unique under a 300 grain xtp is a nice reduced, yet still potent,  load if you want something enjoyable to shoot.  this gives me 1155 out of my 6.5 inch rb-about equal to 44 mag velocities (the bull tames the recoil quite well).

Well I dunno about that myronman3. I have to admit it has been a LONG while since I've had that base on my RBs but I'm thinking that the Taurus version does give enough clearance "barely" to use the irons with it on. Maybe not. I do suffer from CRS ya know.

I just don't care for the RBs with scopes. I'm as blind as the next old fart on here and I just use them within the range I can still see to shoot without a scope. I've done it about every way ya can as far as handgun hunting is concerned but in my old age I'm getting cranky and hard to please. I no longer scope revolvers. If I'm gonna put a scope on it then it will be a TC and I'm using them less and less. I'll still take the TCs with me some this year but I'll have an iron sighted revolver with me EVERY trip and a rifle most of the time. If it is close enough to take with the iron sight handgun I will. IF not I'll use the rifle.

The long barrel scoped handguns are just losing their appeal to me for some reason. It is a phase I go thru from time to time.

I carry my RBs in a Leather Bandito rig from Pistol Packaging and that's what I recommend.

GB: That's interesting. I've been so inclined myself lately.  I took the scope off my 629, put the day-glo front sight on it and that's what I'll go pig hunting with next time; it'll also be my tree-stand deer gun.  I've also been getting really comfortable with my .270-- the only centerfire rifle I've ever owned-- and I must say that I've gained a great deal of respect for it as a tool.  I find it easier to carry in normal field carry, and also when belly crawling, than my 14" contender.

Yup Rudy that's the way I am leaning these days. This is to become my new primary handgun hunting handgun. It replaces the old S&W 29 I carried so long in so many states and which really killed more game for me than any other single gun I've owned other than small game/birds of course.

While I was picking it up today I almost had a heart attacky. I walked over to the used long gun rack and low and behold what do I see but an original Rem. 700 Mtn. Rifle in .270 Win. I thought for awhile it might be the one I stupidly traded off many years ago. Wore a Burris Fullfield II scope (dunno maybe a 3-9?) in Weaver rings on Weaver Bases. Mine had Weaver bases. I noticed the grip had been busted pretty badly and put back together with a screw thru the cap. Didn't like that. Steve wouldn't come lower than $500 out the door. I decided to wait.

Came home and found the receipt where I bought mine in '89 and called back to compare SNs. It wasn't mine. So I passed on it in the condtion it was in. If it had been my old gun I'd have taken it and replaced the stock.
Sure wish I had that rifle back.

So most of my hunting this season will be done with the above Taurus Model 44 in .44 Magnum with 12" barrel shot with factory irons and either my Rem. 700 Mtn. Rifle in 7-08 or my LW .243. I will however take the TC 14" .257 JDJ some and my Taurus Tracker Ti .357 Mag. will always be along and readily accessible "just in case". Doubt the RBs will see any deer hunting use but maybe depending on how the season goes. I would like to use the .454 Casull with the Barnes XPB and the Nosler HGPT both on a deer if the chance is presented.

GB: That's a nice looking revolver, but the barrel's a bit long for my tastes. I like the proportions of my 6.5" 629 44.  Perhaps there is a correlation to (censored word) size  :-)

I do have the hots for a RB though. My next handgun will probably be a 480 Ruger RB with 6.5" barrel and the satin stainless finish.  Either that or a 454. I'm not sure.  On the other hand, I may just keep wanting one. I'm so happy with the 44 that it's hard to get too worked up about something else.

1.  I own 2 RBs in .454, but I don't know about .45 LC ammo as I have never done it.

2.  Taurus has mounts for it, as does another company, but I can't remember their name.  In any event, I think that Taurus has new bases now that fit Warne Maxima Quick Detachable rings.  In this manner, you can quickly take the scope off and use the iron sights.  However, as was previously mentioned, I don't know if you have enough clearance to see the open sights over the almost full length base.

3.  I use Bianchi (I think that's how you spell it) holsters on all of my RBs (I also own a 480 Ruger RB).  It is a synthetic holster that is semi molded to make a semi-perfect fit for the handgun.  I really like it.

4.  See respnse to #2 above.

Rudy, as you get older and your eyes lose the elasticity of youth it becomes ever harder to see up close. The further you can get that front sight away the easier it becomes to shoot good groups. You'd be amazed at the difference in group size that 12" barrel will allow as compared to the 6.5" you now prefer.

I like to tote the shorter barrel guns more but when it comes time to put the bullet in the kill zone that long barrel gets the job done at twice the range for me that a shorter barrel does.

I will likely use my Ruger Bisley SS 5.5" .45 LC some this year. At 25 yards I shoot groups way smaller than my vision should allow with it. BUT at 50? Well that's another story. I doubt I'd attempt a shot there. I know from shooting the old S&W 29 that the longer barrel will allow me to easily make the 50 yard shots and generally any at 75 yards. Now 100 yards I dunno about anymore. Maybe. They used to be not so diffiicult for me but only shooting this one will tell me that.

RB 7 45lc ammo
« Reply #9 on: August 27, 2003, 07:11:02 PM »
Unless RB strickly forbid the use- even if they do you can safely shoot it in your gun-with the knowledge that if you do shoot it alot with 45 LC just clean the cylinder very good before you shoot any 454 through it. It may cause a build up which could increase the pressure when shooting 454's?
I shoot a SRH, an I've shot alot of 45 LC through it and never noticed this supposed build up in mine. Now that said the SRH has 45LC stamped on the cylinder right below the 454 Casull so obviously Ruger wasn't concerned with it.
