40-65.......45-100......45-120 Stub?
« on: January 11, 2009, 09:42:11 AM »
I have been doing some thinking about having a barrel stub made up in either 45-100 or 45-120.I know i could just take a BC and ream it out to either one but I want something unique. So here is what I want to do.

I've got a 20ga. barrel I dont use anymore which would make a good candidate for a stub.I have been looking on Midway at their barrel blanks.I have narrowed it down to a Wind River octagon barrel. The dimensions ar as follows.

40 cal. 32'' tapers from 1.085'' to .875'' has a 1 in 16'' twist

45 cal. 32'' tapers from 1.085'' to .875'' either 1 in 20'' twist or 1 in 18''

Ok my questions. Is this even possible to do with an octagon barrel?Which caliber would you choose? If I go 45cal which twist rate would be better for black powder and heavy bullets?I will most likely have Wayne York do the work as I have read many good things about his work.I know this might end up being a lil expensive but again I want to have something unique.

I did it several years ago with a .45-70 octagon. To be honest with you, it looks like hell with the round-to-octagon configuration.
 Maybe Wayne has some ideas.

??? With a 45-100 or a 45-120 your going to have something unique anyway. It occurs to me that one

would only go with a stub project if there were no other way to achieve the desired results. Why not ream

the Buffalo Classic barrel & save a lot of time & money, as others have done successfully ?   ::)  Jim

Well do to the stub its going to cost upwards of $500.I am thinking maybe just ream the BC barrel to 45-100.Or just go all out and ream it to 45-120.I would really like to hear what the guys hav to say that have the 45-120.

Well after much reading and searching I have made my decision.I will be picking up my SHikari tomorrow and while I'm there I will have my dealer order me a Buffalo Classic.I am going to have it rechambered to 45-120.As far as sights go I want to go with a Vernier tang.Has anyone had Lee Shaver inlet their stock for a tang sight. If so how much does he charge?I cant wait to get this project up and going as I think it will be a hit at the range ;D ;D ;D ;D.Any help help and pointers on this will be appreciated.

If you're going to shooting higher pressure smokeless loads, be careful, that tang sight seems to me like it would want to come back at you pretty hard, and it's not that far from your face.

It will strictly be used with black powder loads as with 38-55.

PM handirifle for info on Lee Shaver installing a false tang on his BC, Lee's website is under construction right now, the link below is from the FAQs.
