This would be cool to find
« on: January 11, 2009, 10:00:32 AM »
I'd find a way to get it home  ;D

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait (Nov. 24, 2003) - Supporting the idea that one can never be too careful, these military policemen use the buddy system to clear a cannon at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. The antique weapon was found at an amnesty box, apparently dropped off by someone who either wised up about getting it through customs or just got tired of hauling it around. The MPs shown here are all members the 438th Military Police Detachment, an Army Reserve unit out of Salt Lake City, Utah. They are (left to right) Spc. Timothy Houston, Spc. Kenneth Labrum, Spc. Robert Hansen and Pfc. Jason Sills. U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Maj. Larry Stevens, CFLCC PAO.

Hmm.... I might be willing to pay the shipping depending on exactly what it was.

What do you think the shipping cost would be?

It is described as an "antique weapon."

Looks to be at least a 3-pounder. What would be the approximate weight of a cannon this size?

Would these four soldiers be able to support the gun tube in the manner shown if it is in fact an antique and not a hollow decorative piece?

These are some big burly guys and together they sould be able lift several hundred pounds.

Being pre 1898 I'm surprised there is a problem, I have known of pre1898 arms being legally sent back to the States

In fact I know of ATF approving the shipment of a bunch of properly demilled (but not butchered) RPG-7's so it is

not impossible for something like this to make it back to the states,  Right now someone I know is in Afghanistan,

while there he's keeping a look out for muzzle loading cannon if he finds anything I'll let you know
;D

my guess is that its approximately 4,5 - 5 foot long
400+ pounds
seem to be black painted , that mean its cast iron , they are a little heavier then bronze cannons as they hold more metal . thats if you compare 2 cannons of same length and bore .

They should ship it home as a unit war trophy.  Wouldn't be the first muzzle loading gun that had that done to it.  That way the taxpayers will pay for it.  But it should be accompanied by a unit member or it might disappear in transit.

After the big stink over some Gulf War 'trophies' that turned out to be looted items, it may be harder to get something like that out than before.

Should try anyway.  Better than trying to smuggle it back.

The piece looks like about the right size and shape for a British 3-pounder, of which there were many models over the years.  It also looks like it is probably bronze to me, as smooth as it is.  Even in arid county an iron gun will get rusty eventually.  Original bronze Brit pieces are often a dark brown like that one may be.  It might weigh 300-320 lbs. or so, gotta look up the wts on them, but again that varied with the model.

The steel mountain gun I fired at the steel plate in a video I linked here recently came out of Afghanistan.  The special forces were allowed to take two each from a large cache they found in a junkyard in Kabul.  There was also at least one WWI Puteaux tank and some large iron guns that no one wanted to try and ship home.  The terrible thing is that all the guns had original steel carriages with them, and when they got to US customs, the agents said the carriages had to be destroyed so it would not be a complete weapon system.  Talk about s__t-for-brains!  These are antiques fer c---sakes.

Wonderful. They really earned their keep that day, eh?

Interesting that in the pic above, they're pointing the cannon into a sand-filled drum used to dry fire small arms into to make sure they're not loaded...

You are both wrong, Customs would have said nothing on this import.  ATF Would have had to give the instructions.  Now the Army MP Customs folks they might have required it, they have some issues.

I'm not saying what they can supposedly do and not do, I'm relaying what I'm told actually happened.
