What's your go to lure?
« on: September 26, 2003, 04:03:22 AM »
The one that you know you can catch a fish on anytime you use it.

For me its a white spinnerbait that I sort of helped designed, at least I order them that way.  I get the lightest wire they have, .035 and a 3/8 body with a 3/0 hook.  Its a willow/colorado tandem.  I just know I can catch a fish on it anytime I use it.

Sorry I forgot this lure its one of my favorites and does catch alot of bass and while its not my go to bait it is my first to start off with bait every trip I make.  Sometimes it catches many bass at one time and I notice something it has a rattle so when it doesn't work the rattle rings a dinner bell so when I switch to something else it works.  I think it actually calls fish in.  Its a REBEL BIG CLAW CRAWFISH crankbait "D74" in green I don't know why but in the wee hours of before first light.  I like to rip it when it first hits the water then either little rips or slow reeled.  The bass hit this lure so hard they actually try to rip it off my line.  Sometimes I really forget and need  memory jogger this morning at first light I caught a 3lb bass with this lure And i said to myself its my go to bait that skipper was talikng about?? Even  if this bait cost a $100 I would buy it for sure its that good!!!  I ordered a whole set of them in all sizes and colors from lurenet.com you can't find these baits in all the sizes and colors. The smaller sizes work great in rivers for bass too. My oldest son who really never caught anything on lures is just getting the hang of them and the two hottest fool proof baits for him has been this lure and the BassProShops Topnocker #25.  Using lures its all about the presentation that is the key to success not just throwing it out there and reeling it in. Like anything else twitch it too!!!  Just a little erratic movement can trigger a strike!!!                                                BigBill

Its not luck in catching fish its SKILL!!!!!! So GOODSKILL to Ya!!!!

My first years of bass fishing I could answer this no problem but this past year its been totally different for me really tough and nothing in the past years that caught fish really worked for me this year but i'll try to answer. Plastics and the new rapala jointed shad rap have really turned on for me this year but in the past:

One of my favorite baits is the minnow either a rapala 2 3/4" orginal floater in blue or a new hologram rebel 2 1/2" black this is my first choice.

Topwater is always the same and my hottest bait is BassProShops Topnocker #25.

Lastyear I just started using spinnerbaits small 1/8oz size but its on and off and this year onoe have worked at all.

In years past it would of been a Manns or Bomber crankbait.

That's easy.  A in-line spinner of my own design.  Somewhat like an old Hawaiian Wiggler but I use an Oklahoma blade.  Depending on the time of the year I use weights from 1/8 to 1/2 oz. with different color skirts, depending on conditions.  I can slow roll this across the bottom or buzz it just under the surface and it's 90% plus weedless.  I used to use a Hawaiian Wiggler but when they quit making them I was forced to either change to something else or make my own.  I am glad I make my own, they work even better(in my opinion  ).  I have taken bluegill(big ones), crappie, catfish and of course bass(both large mouth and small mouth) with these.  Made up a couple of 1 1/2 oz. jobs and took them to the ocean(Ft. Brag, Ca,) and caught one of the biggest ling cod(83 lbs.) I ever caught.  Lawdog

My go to lure for bass fishing is the plastic worm preferably 6" to 8 1/2" in length, favorite color would be a dark plum purple, rigged with a 2/0 to 4/0 Tru Turn Brute hook. What I like about the plastic worm is I can fish it fast, slow, on the bottom, slightly suspended and I can use it to fish a pond that is almost totally covered with moss, weeds, ect.. when no other type of lure will work due to the vegetation. I have also caught catfish and bluegill with a plastic worm and I love using the plastic worm to catch bullfrogs and believe me if you have never caught a big bullfrog using a rod and reel you are missing out on a world of fun.

I'd say that it would be a close run between worms and spinnerbaits as to which has caught the most fish.  I generally use 8 " minimum, and go up to 12 sometimes.  I think a bigger worm promotes bigger fish most of the time.
