Unless you reload, recoil is more than most people like, ammo is expensive, bullets and brass are expensive, accuracy isn't the best generally, if you can use a 45-70 instead, you'll be happier.  ;)

The 45-70 will thump them real well without too much thump on you!!  ;D

Yet if you want you can reload to make it thump you harder!

300+ IF you know your trajectory and have a rangefinder, AND there is little wind.  If there's no wind and a deer is at 400 yards, you can crank your scope up and those Leverevolution bullets will certainly do the job.

I agree, go with the .45-70.  I don't remember anyone here having serious accuracy issues with them.  I bang flopped a year and a half old buck at 220 yards, with my Handi, a .45-70, 325 gr. Hornady LE, and a "Hail Mary" next to the last day of our season.  They all worked together.  I agree with Ty, shoot 'em and learn 'em.  The Handi with LEs is NOT just a 100 yard rifle, and it, the Handi .45-70, will take anything in North America.  Ammo is readily available in a wide range of loads.  It's not cheap, but it doesn't wipe out your budget either.

Good luck, Good Shooting,

Pete

Hands down.  45/70!  I had the 500.  It was purely to try it out.  I didn't full throttle it.  Shot some ultramax(I think) loads and it was fun, but the 45/70 is well respected in these handi forums.  Never read(at least not yet) of a 45/70 causing frame problems either.  I never searched it either tho. :-[  Good luck.

The .45-70 handi is about as good as it gets.

Tim have given it to you straight.
I like mine, but It has given me accuracy problems. Its OK now but no tack driver. I'm glad I have it and like to shoot it. When everything is considered, 45-70 is better.
