« on: January 11, 2009, 03:06:43 PM »
Hey guys and gals, looking for some more 30-30 AI loads for the 125 grain bullet to tinker around with. Any of your pet loads or input would be appreciated.(these are not for a lever gun but a handi)

I shoot alot of the speer 125 grain TNT bullets as well as the big hollow point 130 grain bullet that speer makes as well. I have found hodgdons 4895 powder and winchesters 748 powder to give me the best accuracy as well as velocity from 30-30 ackley handi rifles. I also use the standard primers with all loads and do like speers nickel plated 30-30 cases as they seem to offer the longest case life, not to mention the fact that they just plain look good ;D.

sooter - Doesn't the Nickel plating come off around the shoulder area when the 30-30 is fire formed to 30-30 AI? I have never fire formed nickel plated brass, but I would think that the nickel would not stretch that far.

omcforever - I have just shot the regular 30-30 - no experience with the 30-30 AI. I have thought of doing one however.

I tried some nickel plated 280AI. They scratched the heck out of the custom die wrecked O.D. neck reamer cutter. Some nickel peeled off the cases and embedded into the chamber, they also scraped the moly off the bullets. As far as I am concerned they are not for AI reloading.

I agree with Fred, This is quite common occurrence, as Fred just told us. Its also common for any case forming you may want or need to do. Stay with plain brass. You will keep more of your hair.  ::) ;D

Some years back I was forming 256 win from 357 cases. We all know that majority of 357 ammo are made with nickle cases. To form this with any kind of regularity you must anneal first. Well the nickle didn't much like that and gave me fits. I was also attempting to form from used brass whose history was unknown. Not the best combo. In the end, I purchased a hundred brass Federal 357 mag cases and had about 90% make the transition to 256 Win cases.

LaOtto222,

these 30-30 ackley improved rounds have been fired in my custom H&R 8 times now and show no seperation of the nickel plating from the brass case.
