Case forming recomendations 308win --> 7.65x53 mauser
« on: January 03, 2009, 12:22:09 PM »

Getting ready for the next target season,

I just rebuilt a 1909 argentine with a new barrel and I want to use it for mauser matches.  Graf's prices are just to high so I was thinking of using a bunch of my once fired G.I. nato brass.  Length will be short obviously but If I neck up to 8mm and then size to be tight in the 7.65 die headspace should not be a problem.

Anyone go this route??  Experiences??

   Std 308 is 51MM Argentine is 53MM.. 308 is too short.

Personally I have always used Military 30-06 for this as the head stamp is generic, the brass is quality and there is plenty of room for a new shoulder.  Then just trim off with dremel close and finish with a case trimmer and then all that you need do is go uniform the necks.

cwlongshot gave good advice.

Using .308 Winchester/7.62x51 NATO is not good because they are too short, plus neck expanding to 8mm will not give enough shoulder support for a positive headspace.  You risk case head separations and high brass loss in fireforming.

.30-06 cases are the way to go.
