45/70 black powder reload questions...
« on: January 16, 2009, 04:57:57 AM »
I want to reload .45/70 with black powder.  I have no idea how to do this!.   No will a cheap lee loader work?  You know the kind that you need a hammer for?   Will a muzzleloader measure work?  Do I need a crimp?   If I understand right just reprime the brass pour in 70 grains of powder and seat the bullet until it hits the powder.  If you use a lighter charge either seat the bullet deaper or use wadding right?  About bullet weights.  Can I go up to 500 grains? Or is 405 standard?

Thanks

You may want to do a search on this. BP is way diffrent than smokeless, for one thing you can't just dump 70 grains of black in the case, It won't fit, You have to use what's called a drop tube to get it in there. It helps the powder to compress and pack into the case. 405gr bullets are the basic round used in the .45 GOV but you can go up or down in bullet wieght, are you gonna use cast or jackets? Makes a diffrence in loads also, if you are gonna use cast you need to use bullet lube for BP not smokeless.

It really isn't hard to do but I would recommend you read alot and find out what you need before trying, Its fun to do I like to shoot it in mine sometimes but remember this BP blows up if handled incorrectly, Smokeless burns really fast it dosn't really blow up, That fact makes BP more dangerous but only if you don't mind your P&Qs

shooter: When you wrote dumping in 70 gr of BP I presume you know that this is not a mass weight( scale) but a volume weight.

If it's real blackpowder I would think that 70 grains by volume would also weigh 70 grains.

I doubt it.
Since I only have some triple 7 here I am not certain. However the volume weight between BP and Triple 7 is very slight. I can only tell you that 70 grains volume weighs somewhere around 40 grains by scale.

Chris,

Yes, 70gr volume should weight the same, but it depends on several things, like what grains size, IE 2FG, 3FG etc, the different sizes will take up the same volume, but not be the same weight. Also different brands will be be different weights, that is why BP is done by volume.
