Rule of thumb
« on: January 30, 2009, 03:40:55 PM »
Evening all. I have a question regarding the diameter of trunions. Is there a rule of thumb regarding the size versus the diameter of the barrel. Reason I ask is that I have been playing around with some graph paper drawing a cannon barrel that I eventually would like to get made. The design is loosely based on one of the huge armstrong muzzle loading rifles that there was a web site I believe in gibraltar. The gun was painted a tan color and showed a awesome cloud of smoke and fire. Main part of the bbl is 6" in diameter. Thanks for any info you can give. Frank

For ad hoc designs, the general consensus is that trunnion diameter should equal bore diameter. This will put you in the ballpark with most types of cannon.

Of course if you're trying to replicate an established design, it's best to have good, dimensioned plans.

A rule of thumb is the trunnion diameter should be the same as the bore diameter.

For specifics about Armstrong guns you might send Adrian roads an email and see if he can help you. Adrian is regular here and you find him as A.Roads in the memeber list.

Youy could also contact Bill Curtis http://bill-curtisra.u.yuku.com/.  I believe he use to sell drawings of British artillery.

consider how the trunions will be made.

A few of us (me and Tropico for instance) make our trunions out of already formed round stuff and weld tabs to them. The alternative is to make the entire item from scratch. If you do it "our way", consider the exact sizes of available tubing when making the trunion.

A huge Armstrong Gun? Sounds like the Rinella Gun, a 100 ton Armstrong sited on the island of Malta in Fort Rinella.  Web search Rinella Gun or Malta and it will turn up a few photos.

Thanks to all wh took the time to respond. Will google the armstrong gun on malta. From what little I remember from the pics it was said that when firing they had to warn the locals about it. Once went to the
pennsylvania where dixion's used to have their annual festival. Even though they came over the PA system and warned folks, there was always a few that jumped at the sound. Thanks again, Frank
