Question re: empty "air" space in 45/70 case.
« on: December 27, 2008, 02:29:02 PM »
I've been playing around with 45/70 reloads and I've been using 320 grain jacketed bullets and Reloader #7. I'm using CCI magnum primers.  My question is concerning the amount of empty space in the case - the R7 only fills the case part way.  Is this a problem?  Should I use a dacron wad to keep the powder compact?  Will this impact accuracy or do I even need to worry about it?

The air space is a non-issue except when using Black Powder or the BP subs , with smokeless I shoot as low as 12 grains of Unique which only fills the first 3/8" of the case and use standard primers if that gives you any idea.

Some powder companies even say to NOT use a filler to avoid over pressure problems .

To back up stimpy, Lyman used to list plenty of loads using Dacron filler in their data.  Starting with manual #48 Lyman has stopped listing those loads, and now lists all reduced loads without the filler.

ive shot hundreds of them with 2 to 3 grains of bullseye and a pure lead bullet for plinking and never had a problem. Personaly i dont fool with case fillers.
