« on: June 30, 2008, 08:40:32 AM »
Is it any difference betveen a Smith mod 17 and a model 18, besides the barrel length?
I tried a mod 18 today, and it had the sweetest action I ever have tried. I might have to buy it ;D

Barrel length with the 18 having a 4" and the 17 a 6" or 8-3/8". I've owned all at one time or another.

The old K-frame Model 17 was produced with a 4" barrel for a short time.  The difference in the two models is the barrel diameter...the 18 has a tapered barrel...the 17 has a heavy barrel.  The Model 17 (617 in stainless) was redesigned sometime later...it had a full underlug barrel like an L frame .357, cylinder capacity was increased to 10 rounds and it was also offered in a 4" barrel.

I think the model 17, or 617 like I had , had a "target" front sight, wheras the model 18, which i have never owned, but covet badly, had a "combat" front sight, alamodel 15, 19.

The 18's have a shroud under the bbl to protect the ejector rod.  I don't remember my 17's having that, and i no longer have a 17 to check.  But, i'll never sell my 18.

I thought that the model 18's claim to fame years ago was that it was the sub-caliber version of an identical 38 that Smith use to make.

That's what they advertised at the time, a 22lr version of the M-19 4" bbl...  That's kinda why i bought my M-18 back in 1974 or 5...  I've always loved the M-19, so i bought an 18 to practise and hunt with...

The model 18 never had an enclosed ejector rod. It was designed to be a rimfire copy of the model 15 combat masterpiece. The 17, as already stated had a heavier barrel, even in 4" persuation. The 18 had Baughman ramp style front sights, the 17 had a Patridge style front sight.
